The Akula 310 shares vital components with the BMW G 310 R, such as the 313cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder motor and the trellis steel frame

TVS Akula 310, the homegrown manufacturer’s supersport offering has been confirmed for launch this year by the company’s top officials. The bike was spied a few days ago and made its debut in the form of a concept in the Auto Expo early this year. Earlier, it was speculated that the bike will be launched somewhere in 2017, but TVS has taken our excitement to a whole new height with this news. Reason? One can expect a very competitive price from the bike, probably in the vicinity of the KTM RC 200 (Rs 1.6 to 1.8 lakh). Happy? I bet you are!

As expected, to keep the price low, the Akula 310 could ditch some of the equipment that the fully carbon-fibre concept motorcycle donned back at the expo. A few to name are the upside-down (USD) front forks, the ram air induction system, and, of course, the data collection cameras. Nonetheless, the production version will carry a lot of exciting bits to impress riders who prefer track-focused machines. The full fairing is expected to offer ample wind deflection to make the bike more aerodynamic and hence fast. It will also get the digital instrument cluster, similar to the Apache RTR 200 4V, with the 0-100kmph timing feature, rear-set footpegs, clip-on handlebars, etc.

As the Akula has been developed in collaboration with BMW Motorrad, it will share vital components with the G 310 R, like the steel trellis frame chassis and the 313cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled motor. The engine will probably produce around 34PS of power and 28Nm of torque, all of which will be channelled to the road via a 6-speed transmission. The bike is also expected to wear Pirelli rubber around its wheels, just like its younger sibling, the RTR 200 4V, but expect the tyres to be of a beefier cross-section.

Since the launch has been confirmed, we expect a few teasers or more spy shots of the bike to surface in the coming months, revealing more design details about it. So, stay tuned as we bring you more updates of this hot little 'TeeVee' (no pun intended).
