Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India Pvt Ltd have imported one unit of the Lead 125 scooter. Honda sources have told ZigWheels that the import is for routine research and development only, and that there are no plans of launching the scooter anytime soon in India.
The Lead 125 was launched in Vietnam in 2013 and comes equipped with technology like liquid cooling, a noiseless electric starter, Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) and Honda’s start-stop technology.
What all this technology offers, is more power, more fuel efficiency and according to claims for the Lead 125, as much as 30 per cent more performance and fuel efficiency than the 110cc Honda scooters (in our case, the Activa 3G and its variants).
The noiseless electric starter will eliminate vibrations during starting and this will lead to higher perceived quality and refinement of the scooters in general. The start-stop technology, already available in Hero MotoCorp’s Splendor iSmart, helps conserve fuel by cutting out the ignition when the engine is running at idle for longer periods of time, for example, at a long traffic stop light. This helps conserve fuel and is a boon for traffic conditions in India.
So, are we likely to see an all-new range of Honda scooters and bikes with fuel injection, liquid cooling, start-stop and noiseless electric start? Maybe not. In all likelihood, we may not see all the technology from the Lead 125 to be introduced in Honda’s range of scooters in India, but the start-stop technology and noiseless electric starter could be introduced in Honda scooters, maybe by early 2016.
