The previous gen Superb had a lot of things going for it. It was rich in features, was generous in terms of space and had good engine options to choose from. However it lacked an oomph factor that one would expect from a car at that price point. The Czech car maker has addressed that with the launch of this new generation model, and boy does it look promising!
Launched in the international market almost a year back, the new generation Skoda Superb is finally here and it has been priced starting Rs 22.68 lakh for the base petrol variant (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
First things first, the 2016 Superb gets a edgier design that makes it look a lot more energetic than before. It gets a sharper shoulder line, a deep cut character line and classy looking alloy wheels to go with it, giving its profile a young personality. The C-pillar too now flows smoothly towards the rear unlike the slightly boxy approach of the older model. Up front, the new Superb now gets sleeker headlights on either side of the trademark butterfly grille. The rear too looks equally youthful thanks to the LED type wraparound tail lights and the nicely carved out creases on the bumper and the boot lid.
Hiding under the bonnet, the new Skoda Superb comes with petrol and Diesel engine options, both shared with its younger sibling Octavia. The 1.8-liter TSI unit makes power of 180PS and torque of 320Nm for the manual gearbox version. The automatic will have the same engine mated to a 6-speed DSG box and will come with 180PS of peak power and 250Nm of peak torque. The diesel on the other hand makes 177PS and 350Nm from a 2.0-liter mill. Where the petrol gets both a manual and an automatic gearbox, the diesel will only get the 6-speed DSG automatic option.
But beauty of the new Superb is in the new Volkswagen MQB platform it is based on. Being a modular frame, it has allowed Skoda to play with the dimensions and thereby the space on the inside. The new 2016 Superb promises to be more comfortable and luxurious than ever before. It also comes with a longer list of features.
Considering the price new Superb will not only compete against the likes of the Toyota Carmy, but will also take the fight to luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Audi A3.
