Triumph has recently unveiled an all-new unique Daytona 765. But hold your horses, it is not a production bike! The new Daytona 765 is only being developed to be the basis of the company’s Moto2 engine test program. However, the question is, will we ever see it on the streets? The older Daytona 675 used the same engine as we had seen on the first Triumph Street Triple. So with the new Euro IV-compliant Street Triple RS, which uses a triple-cylinder 765cc engine, it is only natural to expect that Triumph will start working on a new Daytona 765. However, going by the statement from Paul Lilly, General Manager of Triumph Motorcycles, UK, that might not be the case. “The emotional desire is there for the product, but it’s getting it over the business threshold that’s the hard part”, Lilly said.
It’s no secret that the superbike market has been free falling since a decade or so. It is even more evident in the middleweight supersport segment where we have seen Honda CBR600RR and the Suzuki GSX-R600R being discontinued and only the new Yamaha R6 is the only viable option in an almost dead segment. While Honda and Suzuki have the luxury of skipping this segment as they are present in the litre-class market, it isn’t the case with Triumph. The British brand has always been a jack of all trades with its portfolio spanning across almost all the mainstream genres of motorcycles and it wouldn’t prefer to be absent from the supersport segment.
And that is what keeps our hopes alive. Moreover, Triumph has been extensively testing the Daytona 765’s engine for the Moto2 competition. The company has a great opportunity to learn from its experience on the track and implement it on its production models. Also, it has the chassis and all the electronics to work on a new Daytona.
The company will start delivering the engine sometime in 2018, giving enough time for the Moto2 teams to design their racing machines around it for the 2019 season. It won’t be a stretch to say that we may possibly see the new Daytona by 2020.
The Triumph Daytona 765 can be a worthy successor to the Daytona 675, which produces 118.5PS of power and 70.2Nm of torque at 9000rpm. But the bad news is that even though we won’t get a replacement in time, the older Daytona 675 will still be soon taken off the shelves for not being Euro IV-compliant.
Will our hopes ever turn into reality? Only time will tell.
