Well, Honda has filed a design patent for the moped in India

  • The Honda CT125 Hunter Cub was launched in Japan in March 2020.
  • It is a 125cc moped designed for trail riding.
  • It is loaded with features like all-LED lighting, fully digital instrument cluster and even single-channel ABS.
  • Honda Japan has patented the design of its moped, the CT125 Hunter Cub, in India. While this certainly raises speculations about the moped being launched in India, it is to be noted that Honda has had the habit of patenting international-spec models in India for quite some time now. Back in April 2020, the brand patented the CBF190R here, and in May, the Honda PCX electric scooter was patented. One of the reasons why the brand patents international-spec vehicles here could be to ensure it is free from any copyright infringements.

The most important reason as to why the Japanese brand is unlikely to launch it in India is its price. In Japan, the Honda CT125 Hunter Cub is priced at JPY 440,000, which is equivalent to a whopping Rs 3.13 lakh in India. Even if it is completely made in India, the CT125 Hunter Cub will still be prohibitively expensive. It will not be able to compete with the TVS XL100’s Rs 44,294 price tag (ex-showroom Delhi). Moreover, mopeds are generally seen as utilitarian workhorses, so a niche, trail-friendly premium moped like the Honda CT125 Hunter Cub may not find the right kind of buyers here in India.

    CT 125 patent

The Honda CT125 Hunter Cub is powered by a fuel-injected 124cc air-cooled engine derived from the Super Cub. Linked to a 4-speed gearbox, the motor in this moped has a slightly different state of tune compared to the Super Cub. it generates 8.8PS and 11Nm, which is 0.8PS less and 0.57Nm more than the Super Cub.

Other notable features include an all-LED lighting system, luggage rack at the rear, high-set exhaust for good water-wading capability, a fully digital instrument cluster, and a single-channel ABS. The bike gets a disc brake on both ends too. Underpinnings include a gaitered telescopic front fork and dual shock absorbers at the rear. For better off-road dynamics, the moped rolls on spoked wheels wrapped with dual-purpose tyres.
