The track-only machine gets its own one-make championship

Aprilia RS 660 Trofeo front quarter

Even before the Aprilia RS 660 made its global debut, the RS 660 Trofeo had tongues wagging, thanks to Aprilia tester and MotoE rider, Tomasso Marcon, who posted the bike’s photo on his social media handle. Now, the House of Noale has officially introduced the mid-weight track scorcher to the world. Building track-only bikes isn’t new for Aprilia, we have already seen the RS 250 SP, the RSV4 X and more recently, the Tuono V4 X. So what makes the Trofeo such a big deal? Well, for the first time, there’s a lot more going on than just the motorcycle itself.

Aprilia has announced two one-make championships with the RS 660 Trofeo, with six races in a season. As many as 42 participants are allowed per race and racers as young as 15 year, eligible to participate. The championships will follow the 2021 CIV Italian Championship guidelines and will present equal opportunities to individuals and private teams to prove their mettle.

If you are a single participant looking to race, you get to race the Trofeo for EUR 17,950 or Rs 15.89 lakh. However, in this category, the participant needs to have his own crew to manage and fix the bike. For racers with deeper pockets, Aprilia offers an exclusive package that includes the bike, a team to manage the bike, clothes and food. This will set you back by EUR 34,900 or roughly Rs 30.9 lakh, excluding taxes.

Aprilia RS 660 Trofeo side

As for the bike, the Aprilia RS 660 Trofeo is equipped with Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC) electronic suite, a dedicated race-ready ECU, SC project full exhaust system and Pirelli Supercorsa SC1 tyres. Given the demand nature of the sport, the Trofeo features upgraded Brembo brakes at both ends and gets Andreani front fork and Ohlins monoshock. Other changes include race-ready adjustable footpegs and race fairing which has collectively dropped the weight by a whopping 16kg and now weighs just 153kg. The 660cc, parallel-twin engine, in this new avatar, belts out 105PS, 5PS more than the stock bike.

While we will soon get the RS 660 in India, the Trofeo will not be making it to our shores. The bike, like the championship, is only restricted to its homeland, at least for now. However, we are not strangers to manufacturers encouraging and nurturing new talents with one-make championships in India. We have had Suzuki and Honda do it here and India’s own TVS Motor Company. The Hosur-based brand has its one-make championship, and our in-house Rossi, Zaran, won the media-class championship this year, making it a second consecutive win for Team Zig.
