Quick Read:
Gets longer travel suspension over the S variant
Has regular tube-type spoke wheels
Costs Rs 3,77,915 (ex-showroom, Delhi)
KTM has finally heard our prayers and has launched the 390 Adventure R in India for hardcore adventure and off-road enthusiasts. Priced at Rs 3,77,915 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the R variant slots neatly between the 390 Adventure X and the more premium 390 Adventure S (simply called the 390 Adventure in India), offering serious off-road hardware without an eye-watering price tag.
The launch of the Adventure R finally gives Indian riders access to a more focused, trail-ready ADV straight from KTM, instead of relying on aftermarket modifications.

The KTM 390 Adventure R is based on the standard 390 Adventure but packs significantly more off-road-focused upgrades. The biggest change comes in the form of long-travel suspension, with the R getting 230mm of wheel travel at both ends. In comparison, the standard 390 Adventure offers 200mm travel at the front and 205mm at the rear.
This extra suspension travel should make a noticeable difference while tackling broken trails, rocks, and deeper ruts, especially during aggressive off-road riding. Another advantage the R has over the S is that it gets the same knobby Mitas tyres as the 390 Enduro R, which further enhances its offroad prowess.

Along with the suspension upgrades, the ground clearance has been increased thanks to the 21/18-inch spoke wheel setup (the S gets a 21/17-inch setup). The ground clearance is now 270mm, which is 33mm more than the regular 390 Adventure. This allows riders to clear obstacles with more confidence when riding off the beaten path.
However, this off-road capability does come with a compromise. The seat height stands at a towering 880mm, which is 50mm taller than the standard bike. But hey, if you have enough skills to go for this purpose-built ADV, then seat height wouldn’t really be your concern.

Powering the KTM 390 Adventure R is the familiar 399cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, producing 46PS and 39Nm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The motor remains unchanged, which isn’t a bad thing, given its strong performance.
The electronics package is the same as well, with features such as ride-by-wire, traction control, cornering ABS and multiple ride modes, making it one of the most tech-loaded adventure bikes in the segment.

While the Adventure S offers similar performance and off-road intent, it gets tubeless spoke wheels, which add to the overall cost.
The reason the 390 Adventure R is more affordable than the S is because it skips the tubeless spoke wheels and instead gets regular tube-type spoke wheels, helping KTM price it more competitively for Indian buyers.

With the launch of the KTM 390 Adventure R, KTM has finally addressed the demands of riders looking for a more off-road-capable ADV straight from the factory. It offers meaningful upgrades over the standard model and undercuts the Adventure S by sacrificing tubeless spoke wheels rather than performance.
If your idea of adventure involves touring far away from the confines of the city in search of serious trails and challenging terrain, the 390 Adventure R could well be the most desirable KTM ADV you can buy right now.
