Yamaha YZF-R2 Launch in 30 Days! KTM RC200 To Get A Worthy Rival

The R2, in essence, will be a more powerful R15. And honestly, that's all it needs to be.

Yamaha's YZF-R2 trademark in India has received "Accepted & Advertised" status, filed in November 2024.
The R2 is expected to use an enlarged version of the R15's 155cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, with an estimated output of around 24.6 bhp and 19 Nm.
Pricing is expected to be close to the Rs 2 lakh mark to rival the KTM RC 200's Rs 2.14 lakh ex-showroom cost.

The Yamaha R15 has been on sale since 2008, and despite many generations and meaningful upgrades, one thing remained constant: the engine capacity. In the last 18 years, the bike has gone from 149.8cc to 155.1cc. That is about to change with the launch of the Yamaha YZF-R2. Don't confuse it with the R25 though, because this one will likely be limited to an engine upgrade for the R15 and not be a radically new motorcycle.

Why the R2?

Between the R15 and the R3, there is a massive price gap of close to Rs 2 lakh. The R2 can sit very comfortably in that gap while still making the step up to the R3 feel aspirational and not completely out of reach. The R2 is expected to fill that gap with a 200cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder unit, likely derived from the R15's existing 155cc engine. The current R15 engine produces 18.4PS and 14.2Nm; the 200cc version is estimated to produce around 24PS and 19Nm. Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), already present on the R15, is expected to carry over to the R2 as well.

The Deltabox frame is also expected to be modified slightly to accommodate the larger engine. However, the ergonomics, form factor, and overall size of the R15 are expected to continue. This means the R2 could sport minor graphic and colour differences from the R15 and not have a significantly different road presence.

The feature set will continue, and it is massive. Switchable traction control, quickshifter, assist & slipper clutch, dual-channel ABS, an upside-down front fork, TFT instrument console with turn-by-turn navigation, and music controls via the Y-Connect app. There is nothing really missing here, apart from maybe ride modes.

Why Now?

The market for higher-capacity bikes is growing rapidly, and buyers are now more focused on having a better riding experience than just better value. And anyone who wished to buy the R15 but was sceptical about putting down almost Rs 2 lakh on a 155cc motorcycle now has the option to slide into the higher category. Comparable figures from the KTM RC 200 sit at 25PS and 19.2Nm, which will make the R2 a worthy rival to the orange supersport.

Launch and Price Expectation

Yamaha will be targeting pricing close to the RC 200's Rs 2.1 lakh (ex-showroom) price, which means we can expect the R2 to cost between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.2 lakh (ex-showroom). Yamaha has not confirmed a launch date yet, but industry chatter hints that the bike will be launched before the end of June 2026.

So this move from Yamaha is positive. wxpected 24-25 Ps and a top speed of 155+ this R2 is going to be a good buy for the exisitng 200-250 owners aswell bcos it is within the same price of their 250.
