Expert's Opinion on R3
Overview

The Emotional Connect
- The Yamaha R3 is the Japanese manufacturer’s twin-cylinder supersport in the 300cc segment. The bike was once launched in India and was quite popular among enthusiasts, but was discontinued after a few years. Now Yamaha has brought it back and has once again positioned itself as an upgrade from the Yamaha R15. But how well does it manage to live up to this?
Design

A Bigger R15
- The R3 has a commanding road presence with its clean and elegant design
- The fit and finish levels are quite good and the motorcycle feels premium
- While a little more would have been appreciated, the R3 remains true to its heritage of being an understated yet capable motorcycle
- In terms of size, it is not a big upgrade over the R15 and a bit more muscle would have been appreciated.
Performance & Mileage

Buttery Smooth
- The 321cc, parallel-twin engine is very refined and feels quite smooth
- Offers really good mid-range performance and exciting top-end and that makes it exciting to ride
- Tractable nature makes riding in the city very easy, and the bike can pull from 65kmph in 6th gear
- Clutch action is on the heavier side as the bike misses out on a slip-and-assist clutch
- Doesn’t get a quickshifter even as an option
- City performance is underwhelming as the power starts to build later in the rev band.
Handling

Smooth As Butter
- The bike feels very light and tips into corners instantly, thanks to the low kerb weight of 169kg
- The R3 manages to make even the new riders feel like pros. It is happy to lean, remains stable and inspires confidence.
- Braking setup offers really good stopping power and a sharp feel at the lever
- ABS intervention is well calibrated and doesn’t intervene unnecessarily
- The Dunlop tyres don’t offer enough grip and Yamaha could have offered better rubber
Ride Quality

Incredibly Practical
- The suspension is slightly towards the stiffer side, but can handle most bumps and potholes.
Comfort & Storage

Surprisingly comfortable
- The 780mm seat height makes it quite accessible for even shorter riders
- Slightly raised clip-on handlebars are easy to grab and don’t feel too aggressive
- It is less aggressive than the R15 in terms of riding posture.
Features

There’s Nothing Here?
- Helps you focus and connect to the motorcycle.
- The console is very basic and feels like a downgrade when compared to the Yamaha R15
- No traction control, ride modes, slipper clutch or quick shifter which makes this bike feel old.
Verdict

Should You Buy The Yamaha R3?
- The Yamaha R3 is a really fun bike, but it might not be one which may appeal to all kinds of riders. If you are a die-hard Yamaha fan or someone who likes simple no-nonsense bikes, then the R3 will be a good first ‘big bike’ you can get. But otherwise, you are better off looking at other supersports in the 300-400cc segment which offer a lot more value for money.
