Back at the 2023 Auto Expo, Tata Motors pulled the wraps off two new TGDi turbo-petrol engines, a 1.2-litre and a more powerful 1.5-litre unit. The brand had stated that these would eventually power its upcoming lineup. For those familiar, the smaller 1.2-litre engine has already made its debut in the new Curvv SUV-coupe.
On the other hand, the 1.5-litre motor, long associated with the larger Harrier and Safari SUVs, is set to become part of their lineup soon.
During its recent Investor Meet, Tata officially announced that both the Harrier and Safari will offer multiple powertrain options by the end of FY2026. That likely includes the long-anticipated petrol variant for the Harrier and Safari, expected to arrive by March 2026.
Here’s a quick look at the key specs of the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.
The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine generates 170 PS and 280 Nm. Tata Motors has not officially revealed the gearbox choices for this turbo-petrol unit yet, but there’s a strong chance it could be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, along with a 6-speed manual.
With most rivals already offering petrol-powered options, introducing one for the Harrier and Safari could make them more competitive. And with emission regulations becoming stricter, this added engine choice might appeal to a wider set of buyers.
Meanwhile, Tata Motors recently launched the Harrier EV, adding an all-electric option, alongside the existing diesel and upcoming turbo-petrol. It is available with two battery pack options, 65 kWh and 75 kWh. The Harrier EV can be had with either a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive setup. The RWD version is powered by a 238 PS electric motor, while the AWD variant draws power from a 158 PS front electric motor and a 238 PS rear electric motor.
Coming to the current sole powertrain option of the Harrier, it is powered by the 2-litre diesel engine. This powertrain produces 170 PS and 350 Nm, and is mated with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The upcoming turbo-petrol of the Harrier is also likely to arrive at a slightly more affordable price point compared to its diesel engine option. For reference, the Tata Harrier is priced between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 26.50 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Safari starts from Rs 15.50 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 27.25 lakh (ex-showroom).
In terms of rivalry, the Tata Harrier takes on the likes of the Jeep Compass and MG Hector, while the three-row Safari goes up against rivals such as the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus, and the Hyundai Alcazar.
With the addition of a turbo-petrol engine on the horizon, the Harrier is set to be offered with more versatile powertrain options. Are you excited to see this new powertrain option making its way into Tata’s flagship SUVs? And would you consider choosing one over the current diesel engine? Let us know what you think!
