What Is This New PHEV Powertrain By MG?
The PHEV technology means it combines a petrol engine with a large battery and an electric motor. Unlike a mild or strong hybrid, a PHEV’s battery can be charged from an external power source, just like a pure electric car.
MG claims the Tomahawk can travel for over 115 kilometres on electric power alone, making it suitable for most daily city commutes without using a single drop of petrol. For longer journeys where charging infrastructure is a concern, the 1.5-litre petrol engine kicks in, eliminating range anxiety and delivering a massive combined range of over 1100 kilometres.
2026 MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV: Exterior
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV retains the large, imposing proportions like in its EV sibling. The boxy proportions make it look like the SUV it is. The twin-LED DRLs at the front make it uniquely distinctive as the Tomahawk. What makes this different to the EV sibling is the design of the front bumper. While the EV has a body-coloured, closed-off front end, the PHEV has a black front grille allowing air into the engine, which sits inside. This in turn makes it look more purposeful and sporty thanks to it having more blacked-out elements as opposed to the EV.

The side profile is upright and is typical of a 7-seater SUV. One of the only ways to distinguish the PHEV from the EV is the different alloy wheels. Apart from that, the long side profile with the low window line still remains. Subtle chrome accents like on the window line and on the D-pillar add to the premium touch. The 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels fill the wheel arches well, but larger wheels would’ve made the overall profile more substantial.

The rear end of the Tomahawk PHEV is expectedly identical to the EV. Subtle touches differentiate this as the PHEV, which include the badging below the light tail lamp. Another touch for the eagle-eyed spotters is the exhaust pipe below the bumper. The dual-horizontal tail lamps here also resemble the front DRL designs. Overall, the rear profile looks well designed and is finished off with the silver trim on the bumper.
2026 MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV: Colours
The Hector Tomahawk EV is available in a total of seven colour options. Aurora Silver, Shadow Gold, Celadon Blue, Pearl White, Turquoise Green and Starry Black.
Dual-tone colour options include Turquoise Green with a Pearl-White roof. This colour combination is exclusive to the PHEV variant.
2026 MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV: Interior
Inside, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV offers a three-row, 7-seat configuration, targeting larger families. The hero in the cabin is the large 15.6-inch infotainment display on the minimalist dashboard. The dual-tone black-and-brown cabin is also finished in leatherette at most touchpoints. There is a good sense of space inside thanks to the low window line, upright seating, panoramic sunroof and the actual availability of space inside.

While the first and second row occupants have decent space inside, the third row would be most suitable for children.
2026 MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV: Features And Safety
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV includes a kitted-out feature list. They include active keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, wireless fast charger, and powered and ventilated front seats.

The screens in the cabin include a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The driver gets an 8.8-inch digital display as well. This system is packed with a 10-speaker Infinity sound system.

The safety kit includes ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ISOFIX child seat mounts, 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, and electronic parking brake with auto hill-hold.
2026 MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV: Powertrain

2026 MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV: Price And Rivals
Priced from Rs 25.69 lakh (ex-showroom), the MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV doesn't have any direct plug-in hybrid rivals in its segment. Instead, it will compete against SUVs in the segment like the Tata Safari, Jeep Meridian, Mahindra XUV 7X0 and the Hyundai Alcazar.
On the EV front, it will go against its own EV sibling, the MG Hector Tomahawk EV, the Mahindra XEV 9S and the upcoming Tata Safari EV.
ZigSays…
The arrival of a PHEV into the Indian mass market is a long time coming. For the people who are on the fence about buying an ICE-powered car or an EV car, this will be a great middle ground. What the PHEV will be good at is being a great one-car garage. For city use, it can only run in EV mode and not use petrol. The benefit will be greater if you can charge your car at home. For long-distance journeys and overtakes, the petrol engine will take over and power the wheels and charge the battery.
