With the Harrier and Safari Petrol now revealed, the lineup of Tata’s flagship SUVs just been expanded in a major way, with both the SUVs now available to a much larger section of their audience. But can you get these SUVs with your preferred engine and variant combo? Let’s take a look:
In addition to the 2-litre diesel engine, which has been offered with the SUVs since launch, we now also get to see a brand-new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine as well, which is shared with the recently-launched Sierra.

Notably, while the engine is the same, it is offered in a higher state of tune in the Harrier and Safari, given their premium positioning and larger size. Here are the specifications of these powertrains:

As you can see above, Tata has offered both engines with manual as well as automatic transmission options for wider appeal amongst buyers, although there is still no all-wheel drive option available.
Tata offers the Harrier in 7 distinct variants, ranging from the base Smart all the way up to the newly-introduced Fearless Ultra variant. As is the norm with Tata, the carmaker is offering a very wide range of variant-powertrain combinations for buyers to choose from.

As you can see above, with a petrol engine, you can have the Harrier in all variants with a manual gearbox, while the automatic too is also available with all variants except the base Smart variant.

On the other hand, the diesel variant cannot be had at all in the top-end Fearless Ultra trim, but still gets manual and automatic gearbox options in all but the base variant as well(which remains manual-only).
The Safari is offered with a choice of 6 variants, some of which carry a slightly different nomenclature compared to the Harrier. However, just like its siblings, it too gets a lot of variant-powertrain combinations that buyers can pick from.

Almost mirroring the combinations of the Harrier, the Safari too gets manual and automatic gearbox options on all petrol variants, except the base Smart variant which, again, is manual-only.

Just like the Harrier as well, you cannot get the Safari with a diesel engine in the top-most variant, which is called the Accomplished Ultra in the Safari.
Along with the launch of the petrol versions, Tata took the opportunity to bring some feature updates to the SUVs as well. Both SUVs get additional equipment such as a new 14.5-inch QLED touchscreen, an enhanced Level 2 ADAS suite, a 10-speaker JBL sound system with Dolby Atmos and a digital inside rearview mirror.

In addition to these updates, the Harrier now also gets a new Nitro Crimson exterior paint option, while both the #Red Dark editions get re-introduced with black exterior treatment with red accents and a dual-tone red-black interior colour scheme as well. You can read more about all these changes here.

With the new turbo-petrol engine under the hood, the Harrier and Safari now offer a lot more flexibility and choice to buyers with lower usage, but who seek more fun behind the wheel along with added refinement. Along with this, we are also glad to see an extensive and wide range of combinations offered with these powertrains which will further give buyers the ability to get the variant which suits them best. That said, we still wish Tata offered the newly-launched top variants with a diesel powertrain as well, given that it still remains the fuel of choice for a majority of SUV buyers in this segment.
While we await the prices of the new Harrier and Safari Petrol, let us know in the comments section which powertrain you would pick.?
