One of Maruti’s strongest brands, and one of India’s most popular hatchbacks, the Baleno is all set to receive a facelift, and it’s coming sooner than you expect! While not expected to be a major change from the current car, this facelift is likely to bring in some key updates and a new engine as well. Let’s take a look at what we know about it so far:
According to spyshots that have surfaced on the internet over the past few months, the Baleno will retain its curvy and inoffensive design language. However, just like the recently-launched Brezza facelift, it will get an updated fascia with a new grille and reworked bumpers to add some freshness.

In profile, the hatchback is expected to retain its bulbous proportions and chrome door handles, but it could feature a new design for the 16-inch alloy wheels.

The rear-end of the car may remain largely unchanged compared to the current version, with ‘C-shaped’ LED taillamps, a chunky bumper and a roof spoiler. With this facelift, you can also expect a revised colour palette too.
Inside, the Baleno facelift could retain its swooping dashboard design with a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system, three-spoke steering wheel and dual-pod analogue instrument cluster with a TFT MID. Changes here may be limited to a new colour theme and mood lighting to improve the cabin experience.

In terms of the equipment on offer, the updated hatchback is likely to include additional features such as a wireless phone charger and ventilated front seats besides the aforementioned ambient lighting. Existing features like automatic climate control, height-adjustable driver seat, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, head-up display and cruise control will be retained.

Safety is also set to get a major upgrade with the addition of select Level 1 ADAS functions and front parking sensors, as in the new Brezza. Other features expected include 6 airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold assist, rear parking sensors, 360-degree camera and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
While the updates on the surface seem to be subtle, a big change could be on the way under the hood. Rumours indicate that Maruti is planning to plonk the Z-series 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine from the Swift into the Baleno facelift, which will replace the four-cylinder K-series 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol. In the Baleno, this powertrain may also include an AMT gearbox. Here are the expected specifications of the new Baleno:
|

The new Baleno will be launched on September 5-6. It is expected to be priced from Rs 6.80 lakh (ex-showroom). The Maruti Baleno competes in the premium hatchback segment with the Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz.
Ever since its launch in 2015, the Maruti Baleno has slowly become the go-to option for most hatchback buyers in the sub Rs 10 lakh segment, and it continues to impress with its spacious interior, all-rounder personality and modern features. This facelift, though not major, will still be in focus, especially given the astounding fuel efficiency figures of the Z-series engine from the Swift and Dzire. However, we will only be able to pass a final judgement once the car is revealed and full pricing is announced early next month.
