BMW has launched the X1 LWB (long-wheelbase) for Rs. 49.90 lakh. This comes after the success of the iX1 long-wheelbase in India. The new X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) model focuses almost entirely on enhancing rear passenger comfort, a direct appeal to the chauffeur-driven buyer.
The long-wheelbase models are shared with the Chinese market since the tastes of both Chinese and Indians align.
If you already have an X1, should you change? Here’s what’s new with the X1 LWB.
Quick read:
-
The X1 LWB is launched in a single variant with an introductory price of Rs 49.90 lakh (ex-showroom).
-
Its wheelbase is stretched by 108 mm, which translates to a massive 109 mm of extra knee room for rear passengers.
-
Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine making 156 PS, paired with a 7-speed DCT and comfort-tuned suspension.
-
It offers a unique proposition for buyers who prioritise rear-seat luxury, setting it apart from its direct rivals.

2026 BMW X1 LWB: Exterior
Despite the stretch, the design language is identical to the X1. The BMW is instantly recognisable from a distance thanks to its iconic large kidney grille sitting on the fascia. The twin-pod LED headlamps with the L-shaped LED DRLs give the X1 and the LWB sibling its distinctive look. The sculpted bumper has a sporty design vibe thanks to the large air-dam and the air-curtains, which improve its aerodynamics.

The most obvious change is the vehicle's increased size. The X1 LWB measures 4,616 mm in length, making it 116 mm longer than the standard model. Moreover, the wheelbase has been extended by 108 mm to 2,800 mm. This is visually apparent in the longer rear doors and the lengthier profile. BMW claims the X1 LWB is the longest vehicle in its class.

The profile of the X1 LWB is almost identical to its regular sibling. The majority of the difference lies here, but the overall profile looks balanced. If one didn’t know, they wouldn’t be able to tell that this is the long-wheelbase version. The satin silver accents on the window line, on the roof rails and the door cladding, give it a classy look. The side profile is not too aggressive, but is tastefully designed as a crossover. The 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels match the overall sporty design of the X1 LWB

The rear end looks quintessentially European thanks to the sharp lines and the tastefully executed design elements. The smoked L-shaped LED tail lamps neatly bracket the indicators and the reverse lamps. The tailgate houses the neatly designed roof spoiler and the number plate housing. On the bottom, we find the X1 badging on one side and the S-drive 18 Li, which states that this is the front-wheel-drive model powered by the 1.5-litre engine. The Li stands for the long-wheelbase petrol.

The X1 LWB is available in four paint options: Carbon Black, Night Dusk Blue, Mineral White, and Skyscraper Grey.
2026 BMW X1 LWB: Interior
While the driver gets BMW’s latest cockpit design, the real story is what happens behind the front seats. The extended wheelbase directly creates a cavernous rear cabin. Passengers in the back get an extra 109 mm of knee room, transforming the feel of the space. It isn't just bigger; it's also more comfortable.

The BMW X1 always had a neatly designed cabin with good fit and finish. The dashboard is carried over from the regular X1. And so, the dual-screen setup, and the sporty layered dashboard is carried over. One of the major differences here is cognac coloured interior as opposed to the brown leather interior in the standard X1.

The hero feature of the LWB is the L part on the backseat. The space is ample for tall people even more than 6-ft tall. Another feature not to miss is the large fixed glass roof, which opens up a lot more light into the cabin, making it feel airy and luxurious.
2026 BMW X1 LWB: Features
The X1 LWB is equipped with a comprehensive suite of modern technology. The cabin's centrepiece is the dual curved display setup. The center 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The other screen is the 10.25-inch digital driver's display.

The tech package includes: Wireless phone charger, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

It also includes powered front seats with memory for the driver's seat.
2026 BMW X1 LWB: Safety
BMW has built the X1 LWB with a host of safety features with standard safety kit, featuring eight airbags, 360-degree camera, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.

The Level-1 ADAS features include Dynamic Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning with braking intervention, and Lane Departure Warning. The adaptive LED headlamps also have a cornering function for better illumination around bends.
2026 BMW X1 LWB: Powertrain Options
The BMW X1 LWB is offered in India with a single powertrain: a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. This unit sends power to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT).

While a three-cylinder might seem modest for a BMW, its output is ample for city and highway use.

Crucially, BMW has fitted the X1 LWB with a comfort-tuned suspension. This setup has been calibrated for the longer and heavier model to deliver a plusher, more absorbent ride over varied Indian road conditions, prioritising passenger comfort.
2026 BMW X1 LWB: Rivals
In the Indian market, the BMW X1 LWB competes against established premium compact SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLA, and the Audi Q3. None of its direct competitors offer a stretched version in India.
This unique selling point offering rear-seat space and comfort that rivals cannot match. It will likely appeal to those who are often chauffeur-driven or have families and find the rear seats in other segment offerings to be a compromise.
ZigSays...
The launch of the X1 Long Wheelbase is a clever and targeted move by BMW. It directly addresses a clear demand in the Indian luxury market for chauffeur-driven comfort in a more accessible and compact package. By prioritising rear-seat space, it creates a compelling reason for buyers to choose it over rivals that are built primarily for the person behind the wheel.

The significant increase in knee room, combined with more comfortable seating and a high-tech cabin, makes it a very practical choice. While the 1.5-litre petrol engine focuses more on refinement than outright speed, the comfort-tuned suspension should make it an excellent vehicle for daily use. If you’re shopping for a premium compact SUV but have been disappointed by the tight rear quarters of its competitors, the BMW X1 LWB is a luxurious and highly practical solution.
