If you are eyeing one of these two Tata ICE-powered flagship SUVs, there is good news! Tata has now officially confirmed that the Harrier and Safari will be available with a turbo-petrol engine option on December 9. Let’s take a dive into the details we know about till now:
Underneath the hood, both these SUVs will be available with the carmaker’s 1.5-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol engine.Notably, this turbo-petrol engine, which is expected to debut with the upcoming Sierra first, will add a crucial powertrain option that limited the appeal of both the SUVs. Here are the specifications:
|
Engine |
1.5-litre turbo-petrol |
|
Transmission |
6-speed manual/7-speed dual-clutch automatic (Expected) |
|
Power (PS) |
170 PS |
|
Torque (Nm) |
280 Nm |
*Expected figures
Besides this, both the SUVs will continue with the 2-litre diesel engine option as well producing 170 PS and 350 Nm, which is paired to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Going one step further, the Harrier also gets an EV version with optional all-wheel drive setup, giving buyers a wide range of powertrain options.
The Harrier sits between the upcoming Sierra and the Safari in Tata’s portfolio. It gets equipped with features such as a voice-assisted panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 10.25 inch digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, powered tailgate and powered front seats.

Safety-wise, the Harrier gets a Level-2 ADAS suite, 7 airbags, electronic stability program, tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic parking brake with auto-hold and hill hold assist. The Harrier has also scored a 5 star rating in the Bharat NCAP crash tests.
The Harrier is priced between Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 25.25 lakh (ex-showroom).
Talking of the Safari, it sits as Tata Motors’ top-of-the-line product in their ICE SUV lineup. While the features set is similar to the Harrier, the Safari stands out from the Harrier because of its three-row seating layout. Customers opting for the 6-seater variants will also be happy to know that the second-row captain seats also get a ventilation function for added comfort.

Tata has priced the Safari between Rs 14.6 lakh to Rs 25.95 lakh (ex-showroom).
While the Harrier and Safari have been immensely capable cars, the lack of a petrol engine option always hindered their appeal. Now, with this new turbo-petrol, both SUVs feel more complete, especially for buyers in the Delhi-NCR region where diesel cars are allowed to ply on the roads for just 10 years as opposed to 15 for petrol vehicles.
