Today’s car buyer demands more options, and Tata Motors has always been known to offer a huge range of variants and combinations to suit every buyer who walks in. However, among its lineup, the Punch stood out previously as it offered only one engine option till now. With the newly-launched Punch facelift, though, Tata has fixed that with not just one, but two new powertrain options! Let’s take a look at what are the variant-wise powertrain options available:
Starting off from the base 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which has been carried over from the previous Punch, comes mated to 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options. Tata also offers a bi-fuel CNG option with this engine; this now gets a 5-speed AMT transmission too, in addition to the 5-speed manual gearbox, which was the sole offering previously.

Then, we move on to the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine from the Nexon, which makes its debut in the Punch as a more powerful alternative and addresses the weakest point of the pre-facelift version. This engine can be had with a 6-speed manual transmission only.
Here are the detailed specifications of these powertrains:

The base variant of the Punch, keeping in mind the affordability of the package and competitive pricing offers Petrol and CNG powertrains, but only with manual transmission options.

Moving on to the one-above-base Pure variant, it too is offered with Petrol and CNG powertrains with manual transmission options only. This is understandable, since these will largely cater to highly cost-conscious buyers.

The Pure+ mid variant is the one that introduces an AMT transmission for both the Petrol and CNG engine options, and given that it gets all necessary equipment, it is an ideal choice for first-time buyers who desire an automatic transmission at an accessible price.

Next up is the Adventure variant, which is the only trim to offer all powertrain combinations that are available on the Punch facelift. It is also the entry-level variant to get into the new turbo-petrol engine option, and for that reason, could prove to be popular amongst enthusiasts and buyers with a lot of highway usage alike.

The second-from-top Accomplished variant focuses mainly on the NA Petrol engine, with both MT and AMT gearbox options offered. For CNG buyers who want the pleasure of a stick-shift with a lot of equipment, this is the top-end trim and a great option.

Topping off the range is the Accomplished+S variant, which offers all combinations, except the CNG+MT. You do, however, get the CNG powertrain with the AMT transmission and the turbo-petrol engine option as well, along with the NA Petrol engine.

With a wide range of engine options, and now the much more powerful turbo-petrol on offer, the Punch has its underpinnings sorted. And we are glad that Tata is offering all three powertrains with a lot of choice. It will go a long way in making the Punch facelift as much or more popular than the outgoing car.
