The KTM ship across the world will soon be steered from Pune as Bajaj has received approval from the Austrian Takeover Commission

[Update: Bajaj has finally taken complete control over KTM’s parent company. It will now give Bajaj complete control over KTM’s global operations.]

Bajaj To Soon Takeover KTM Completely

Quick Read:

  • Bajaj Auto will officially take management control of KTM’s parent company

  • The move follows Bajaj’s €800 million (approx Rs 8,063 crore) rescue investment that saved KTM from bankruptcy

  • With this, Bajaj will now play a leading role in KTM’s future

KTM’s future will be officially steered from Pune. Bajaj Auto has received approval from Austrian regulators to take management control of Pierer Mobility AG, KTM’s parent company. This will mark the most significant shift in the 17-year-long Bajaj-KTM partnership. It’s also important to note that this is done without making a mandatory takeover bid to the shareholders of Pierer Mobility AG.

Bajaj To Finally Call Shots

This move comes at a crucial time for KTM, which has spent much of the past year battling financial turmoil, production halts, and mounting debt. Once Europe’s biggest motorcycle maker, KTM had to suspend operations at its Mattighofen and Munderfing plants due to unsold inventory. At one point, nearly 2.6 lakh units reportedly sat unsold in warehouses, choking cash flow and crippling supply chains.

That’s when Bajaj Auto stepped in. Earlier this year, the Indian manufacturer invested around €800 million (approx Rs 8,063 crore) to pull KTM and its sister brands, Husqvarna and GasGas, back from the brink of death. It wasn’t a bailout done for headlines; it was a rescue operation that kept the world’s most famous orange brand alive.

Like every other stakeholder, Bajaj was also surprised how rapidly KTM’s situation went on a rapid decline. Speaking to a media house, Rajiv Bajaj, the Managing Director of Bajaj Auto quoted his Management Guru’s lines that stuck with him: “The single biggest reason for corporate demise is corporate greed.” Rajiv also said that he unfortunately witnessed it play out at KTM over the last twelve months. He cited operational greed, strategic greed as some of the reasons for KTM’s downfall, giving examples of KTM’s overproduction, and involvement with brands that stray away from the core ethos of KTM’s businesses. And now, with the intended takeover, Bajaj will have a much greater say in KTM’s future, not just as an investor or manufacturing partner, but as the key manager of its turnaround strategy. It gives the Indian company deeper insight into operations, quality, and product planning, something that could help KTM rebuild confidence globally while leveraging Bajaj’s cost efficiency and production expertise. Who knows, we might even see KTM superbikes being manufactured right here in Pune!

A New Beginning

Rajiv Bajaj, speaking about the long-standing partnership, said earlier, “Manufacturing has traditionally been one of our strengths, and the one-millionth KTM milestone is a testimony to that.” With Bajaj who will be officially managing Pierer Mobility, that strength could be the foundation for KTM’s revival.

For KTM, this change in command represents a chance to reset its path after months of uncertainty. For Bajaj, it’s a validation of its steady climb from being a mere local bikemaker to becoming the custodian of one of the world’s most iconic motorcycle brands. A bike-equivalent of Tata acquiring Jaguar-Land Rover, we say!
