KTM Saved By Bajaj Auto With Money On Loan, Bajaj To Increase Stake On KTM Too

Quick Highlights:

  • Bajaj Auto invests more money in KTM

  • This money will help KTM pay its debts and restart its operations

  • Bajaj wants to move from being a minority investor to a major owner in KTM

Bajaj Auto has emerged as the new ray of hope for KTM, as the Indian manufacturer has further invested more money in the Austrian brand to keep it alive. This move has been strategically done by Bajaj as it aims to be a major stakeholder in the orange bikemaker.

Lives To See Another Day

Out of 800 million Euros promised, Bajaj Auto had already invested 200 million Euros in the Austrian manufacturer. The remaining amount (600 million Euros) will now be transferred to KTM to help it pay off its debts and restart its operations. This massive influx of cash will help KTM keep its lights on for quite some time and make amends to all its issues.

The last day for KTM to pay off its debt is May 23, 2025, and if the manufacturer failed to do so, it would’ve gone into insolvency. This would have meant that KTM in its entirety would have gone on sale, and it was reported that BMW Motorrad was ready to pounce on that opportunity. Thankfully, Bajaj has prevented all these from happening.

What Does Bajaj Want?

Before this massive investment, Bajaj Auto, through its subsidiary, essentially held a 37.5% stake in  Pierer Mobility AG, and now this number will go up. Essentially, Bajaj wants to move from being a minority investor to a major decision-maker in KTM. It also plans to provide debt financing to help KTM with its restructuring, and to take a more active role in KTM's governance and future direction.

What Does This Mean For Us?

While things may not change immediately for us enthusiasts here in India, these developments will have more of a long term impact on the brand’s strategies. KTM already sees India as an important market, and the development of the 160cc Duke and RC platform is in fact a testament to this strategy. Bajaj may also gain greater technological know-how over the years as it may be more privy to KTM’s R&D efforts. Who knows, all this might be an elaborate plot to launch the Pulsar 1390!
