Kinetic, a brand which has been etched into the memories of almost every 90’s kid in India, is all set to make a major comeback in the Indian two-wheeler industry. It recently granted its brand license to its subsidiary, Kinetic Watts and Volts Ltd., to use the brand’s patents and trademarks to sell electric vehicles in India. But what does this mean to us enthusiasts?
Kinetic has been a well-known brand ever since their days of partnership with Honda and their two-stroke DX scooter, which still to this day has a cult-like following. Now, since the company recently transferred its rights to its sister company to make and sell electric products in India, maybe we could see the resurrection of the legendary DX scooter in an electrified avatar.
The reason we expect the ‘DX’ moniker to make a comeback is because the manufacturer already has the e-Luna on sale in India. Kinetic used to sell the petrol-powered version of the moped, which was recently re-launched in an all-electric avatar. So, getting the DX nameplate back in an electric version seems to be the next most natural step to take for the manufacturer.
Although this trend is not just limited to a single manufacturer in India. We have seen other big brands such as Bajaj bringing back the Chetak in an electric avatar, Honda launching the Activa e:, and Suzuki with the eAccess. Using names which already have a legacy tied to them is something which manufacturers do to invoke emotions, and the Kinetic DX name has a lot of emotions attached to it.
While the e-Luna is the more utilitarian product, expect the upcoming scooter, which was also spied testing last year, to cater to traditional scooter buyers. And we think that this should give Kinetic a fighting chance in the lucrative e-scooter segment.
