A test mule of the India-spec GTS 300 scooter was spied, and it looks production-ready

Piaggio India looks to be working on an exciting prospect for India. Almost three years since our exclusive story about Vespa’s future plan for India involving a higher-capacity scooter, we now have the first look at what the brand might soon offer.

Going by a spy shot emerging on the internet, there looks to be a larger displacement Vespa scooter in the making, specifically developed for the Indian market. The aesthetic of this scooter closely resembles the international-spec GTS 300 maxi-scooter, with a few differences being the rear indicators and tail light housing design. The test mule also sports a fully-digital instrument console.

The airbox seen on this test mule looks smaller than its international counterpart, and it is reported that the mule is powered by an air-cooled engine instead of a liquid-cooled unit seen on the GTS 300. It also looks significantly bigger than the 125cc and 150cc motors seen on the scooters in the brand’s Indian lineup, and the lack of a kickstarter does hint at this mill being a sub 300cc unit.

Furthermore, compared to the international-spec bike, another mismatch on this mule is the rear drum brake, which, along with the air-cooled motor, seems to hint that Vespa is looking to keep the costs of this upcoming scooter in check. We expect this scooter to be equipped with the safety net of single-channel ABS.

This test mule appears to be production-ready, featuring quite a few chromed accents all around, something not commonly seen on test mules. Thus, we expect this scooter to be launched in India as early as June 2023. Once launched, it will rival the Keeway Sixties 300i, even undercutting it by a considerable margin. For perspective, the Sixties 300i is priced at Rs 2,99,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).
