While SUVs have been generating plenty of interest across the globe, Honda Cars India’s portfolio has so far been dominated by sedans and hatchbacks. That’s set to change with the Japanese carmaker confirming the development of an India-centric SUV which will be out by the end of 2023.
Speaking about its new SUV to ET Auto, Honda Cars India President and CEO, Gaku Nakanishi, said, “I can confirm that Honda is under development of a new SUV product specially developed for the Indian market since the customers are focusing more on SUVs and its segment share is increasing.”
Details of Honda’s upcoming SUV are under wraps but it could utilise the powertrains of the fifth-gen Honda City. So, we wouldn’t be surprised if it gets the 121PS 1.5-litre petrol and 100PS 1.5-litre diesel engines under the hood.
In a market where features are prioritised, Honda’s upcoming SUV should come loaded with an infotainment system with connected car tech, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a part-digital instrument cluster, sunroof, cruise control, and keyless entry with push button start. =
Passenger safety should be taken care of by multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors, a blind spot monitor, and electronic stability control.
Honda’s new SUV could sit in the hotly contested compact SUV segment with the likes of the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, and Skoda Kushaq. Honda may be late to the party, but if it manages to get the pricing right, between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 17 lakh, it could have a winner on its hands.
