To keep things fair, we’ve picked the 1-litre 3-cylinder version of the Taigun

The Mahindra XUV 3XO is the latest SUV on the block to offer punchy performance from a turbo-petrol engine. With prices ranging between Rs 7.49 lakh and Rs 15.49 lakh, the XUV 3XO easily overlaps cars from a segment above. As a result, we couldn’t help but draw a performance comparison of the 3XO’s most powerful 130PS turbo-petrol engine with the smaller turbo-petrol (1-litre) mill of the VW Taigun. Anything can happen!

Both the XUV 3XO and the Taigun get a 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. However, the Mahindra has a higher displacement, which probably is the reason for the disparity between their output figures. They are evenly matched in terms of their transmission options, though.

Save for the 80-0kmph braking test, the XUV 3XO gets the better of the Taigun in every other parameter. The extra output of the Mahindra translates into a much quicker 0-100kmph time of 11.21 seconds, compared to the VW Taigun’s 13.08 seconds.

The difference narrows down in the quarter mile test, but it still is an easy win for the XUV 3XO. The 100-0kmph braking test is the closest of the lot, with just 0.3 metres (30cm) separating the two cars.

VW Taigun

Mahindra XUV 3XO

Price

Rs 11.69 lakh to Rs 19.99 lakh

Rs 7.49 lakh to Rs 15.49 lakh

Given that the VW Taigun is a bigger car, which sits in a segment above the XUV 3XO’s, the price difference doesn’t come as a surprise. Also, the Taigun can also be had with a 150PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, but considering that prices for those variants start from Rs 18.17 lakh, only the 1-litre engine was considered for this real-world performance comparison test to have some price overlap between the two.
