Yamaha’s MT range has always offered a hyper naked attitude in small, affordable packages, a recipe that seems to be working well amongst enthusiasts. And now taking things up a notch, an accessorized MT-125 has been put on display at the Osaka Motorcycle Show in Japan.
This pocket-rocket has been kitted with practical bits like a windshield and adjustable levers. Hell it even gets a full-blown Akrapovic exhaust with a carbon fibre end cap for some extra flair. It also gets an aluminum crankcase cover, finished in silver, for some added protection.
The Japanese marque could offer these bits as a part of its accessory packages. What’s interesting is that the bike even gets traction control and a TFT console in Europe! An overkill, you say, for a 125cc bike? You see, motorcycles are for the enthusiasts there, and people don’t mind splurging some extra money for them. While the baby MT isn’t currently on sale in the brand’s home country, we expect Yamaha to launch it in Japan soon.
The bike’s 124.45cc mill makes 15PS and 11.5Nm, as against the KTM 125 Duke’s 14.5PS and 12Nm. Heck, at 142kg, it’s a whole 17kg lighter than the baby Duke too! However, before you get carried away with this news, let us tell you that Yamaha won’t be bringing the MT-125 to India. Why? Because of the European A1 licensing norms, which place a cap on displacement, power output and weight, 125cc bikes are considered to be for novice riders. The MT-125 is also a direct competition to the 125 Duke in European markets, with the two motorcycles being neck-and-neck on paper.
Since these licensing rules aren’t present in India, and a larger displacement means bragging rights for the Indian buyer, we have the bigger MT-15 instead. However, if you insist on the premium, sporty 125cc bike, the KTM 125 Duke is your only option in India. However, if you are looking for a well-rounded 125cc bike with a good balance of features and performance, the TVS Raider is your best bet, which too gets a TFT console now!
