It will be a four-seater, designed from the ground up and will have an interior inspired from the S Class

After giving a couple of teasers, Mercedes-Benz is all set to unveil the next generation AMG SL on October 28, 2021. The generational update is set to bring a raft of changes which will include it being built on an all-new architecture.

While we haven’t had a glimpse of its design, the carmaker did reveal some key details about the new AMG SL’s lightweight composite aluminium body shell. For starters, it's different to the current SL or the AMG GT Roadster, and is made out of aluminium, steel, magnesium, and carbon-fibre elements to make it a lightweight at around 270kg (without the doors, bonnet, boot lid, and add-on assembly parts).  It is also set to handle corners better than before with torsional stiffness increased by 18 percent, as well as transverse and longitudinal rigidity up by 50 percent.

We’re yet to know what will power the new AMG SL, but Mercedes has hinted at multiple powertrains including hybrids. The standard variants should get rear-wheel drive as standard, with the higher variants getting the AMG 4MATIC+ all-wheel drivetrain.

Technical details aside, the AMG-SL will be a four-seater offering, and will get a cabin inspired by ‘best car in the world’, the 2021 S-Class. By that we mean the 11.9-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system, and a digital driver’s display. Other highlights include turbine-style AC vents with ambient lighting that changes colour as per the temperature chosen, sports front seats, and a dual-spoke AMG steering wheel.

The next generation Mercedes-AMG SL could mean the AMG GT Roadster could get the axe. There’s no word on whether the new AMG SL will make it to India, but we think it’ll be an alternative to the BMW Z4
