With safety becoming a major consideration for car buyers in India, Bharat NCAP has been consistently crash-testing popular models. These models in particular are priced under Rs 10 lakh, and have delivered commendable results in crash tests. Given the rising demand for sub-4m SUVs, let’s take a look at all the models in this category that have secured a 5-star safety rating under Bharat NCAP.
Starting off is the Tata Nexon, which, living up to the brand’s reputation, achieved a 5-star safety rating for both adult and child occupant protection. It scored 29.41 out of 32 for adult protection, while the child protection score stood at 43.83 out of 49. In the frontal offset and side movable barrier tests, it secured 14.65 and 14.76 out of 16, respectively.
On the safety front, the Nexon features 6 airbags as standard, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a 360-degree camera system with front and rear parking sensors.
With its major update last year, the Mahindra XUV 3XO not only received a refreshed overhaul inside out, but also improved its safety. It scored 29.36 out of 32 for adult protection, and 43 out of 49 for child protection, securing a 5-star crash test rating. Notably, the XUV 3XO scored 13.36 out of 16 in the frontal offset test and a full 16 out of 16 in the side movable deformable barrier test.
Safety features in the XUV 3XO include 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera system, hill hold and hill descent control, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, all-wheel disc brakes, and level-2 ADAS.
The Skoda Kylaq holds the title of the safest subcompact SUV, scoring 30.88 out of 32 for adult occupant protection and 45 out of 49 for child occupant protection. It not only secured a 5-star rating but also delivered impressive scores of 15.04 and 15.84 out of 16 in the frontal and side barrier tests, respectively.
Safety in the Kylaq is taken care of with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill hold assist, and rear parking camera with sensors.
The latest entrant in the sub-4m SUV segment, the Kia Syros, has also secured a 5-star BNCAP crash test rating. It scored slightly lower than the Kylaq, with 30.21 points for adult occupant protection and 44.42 for child occupant protection. In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, the Syros scored 14.21, while in the side movable deformable barrier test, it achieved a full 16 out of 16.
Kia offers the Syros with safety features like 6 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, electronic parking brake, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers and level-2 ADAS.
Considering the price at which all the above-mentioned SUVs are offered, a 5-star crash test rating is definitely a big plus from a buyer’s perspective. With a couple of them even offering advanced features like ADAS, it’s clear that safety is now a priority for manufacturers as well. Let us know in the comments below which of these SUVs you would pick based on their safety scores and features.
