Plans for global domination are well underway for German car maker Volkswagen. Though products from the venerable brands under the VW Group umbrella are thundering on in all directions, there is a hitch. The only area where the Japanese still have a jump on the Germans is small cars. And VW’s forthcoming ‘up!’ is a step to correct this.
Ready for launch at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, one of Volkswagen’s traditionally preferred and strong launchpads, the up! will showcase a new line of thought from Volkswagen, beginning with the minimal footprint approach that the car takes. At just over 3.5 metres long and 1.64 metres wide, the up! will make for one of the smallest four-seaters in the world. Despite that, space on the inside has been liberated in all directions which will actually be right up the urban alley for cities around the world, from New York to Navi Mumbai.
Under the bonnet will be an ultra frugal three-cylinder petrol engine, tuned in two different versions to dish out 60PS and 75PS of power. Current fuel efficiency figures are being projected at around 25kmpl. Quite frankly, we have heard of such numbers only from Japanese petrols before this.
Loaded with technology, creature comforts and safety aids on the inside, the up! is sure to prove a classy VW product.
