Yes, you read it right! The Tesla Model S, which is quite famous for beating some of the high-performance cars in a straight line run, has received a battery upgrade. The new battery is a 100KWh unit as opposed to the current 90KWh one available in the Model S P90D (the previous top-of-the-line Model S). And, as is the case with the P90D, the new car also draws its variant's name, the P100D, from the 100KWh battery it uses. Thanks to this bigger battery, the four-door sedan can accomplish the 0-100kmph sprint in just 2.5 seconds. Not bad for a sedan, right?
The new 100KWh battery has also increased the range of this all-electric car. The Model S P100D now has a range of 507km -- according to a US agency test (Environmental Protection Agency) and 613km as per different new European driving evaluation tests. The mentioned ranges refer to the distance that the car can cover with a full charge.
The car is only available in an all-wheel-drive configuration, in which it employs the dual motor setup. Unlike several previous upgrades in the Model S, where one can just update a software and be done with it, the P100D requires one to buy the necessary hardware, which, in this case, is the 100KWh battery.
Aesthetically, the P100D is identical to the P90D, except for the badges at the back, of course. On the inside too, the car remains unchanged, however, it does get bigger and better seats from the manufacturer’s more premium offering, the Model X.
Speaking of which, the Model X is also available with the same upgrade. And, despite, the crossover’s increased weight and the aerodynamic limitations of a box-shaped car, it reaches the 100kmph mark from the standstill in 2.9 seconds. Still good. Isn’t it? Like the Model S, the new battery has also extended the Model X’s range to 465km according to EPA’s test and 542km as per a European testing agency’s results (both ranges on a full battery charge).
The Model S P100D is priced at $1,34,500 (approximately Rs 90 lakh, excluding duties), whereas the Model X P100D is available at $1000 (~Rs 67000) more than the S’ price.
Speaking of Tesla’s Indian plans, the company has already made it clear that it will offer the Model 3 in the country, once it is launched globally. Also, it was reported that the Indian government was trying hard to bring the company to our shores under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. However, nothing is concrete as on now, but, who knows, setting up a plant in India could also work for Tesla in the near future.
