It’s not easy to penetrate the cut-throat mass commuter motorcycle segment of India, and so Suzuki Motorcycle India has decided to focus on niche segments, for now. During the launch of Suzuki Gixxer SF, India’s most affordable full-faired motorcycle, Atul Gupta, Executive VP, Suzuki Motorcycle India told TOI, “We would further consolidate our position in the superbike market of 1000cc and above with the launch of the all new S1000 and S1000F motorcycles later this year.”
Sources have confirmed that the naked 2016 GSX-S1000 and the fully-faired Suzuki GSX-S1000F will be launched in India in June 2015. The S1000 is a roadster based on the popular Suzuki GSX-R1000 superbike, while the GSX-S1000F is a sports-tourer based on the same platform.
Both the 2015 Suzuki S1000 and S1000F are reported to use a new frame which is said to be even lighter than the 2014 GSX-R1000, along with a lightweight alloy swingarm. Up front the bike will sport a 43mm KYB inverted fork, while a link-type coil spring shock will anchor the rear. Stopping duties will be handled by Brembo monobloc calipers, with dual 310mm floating discs on the front. Anti-lock braking is expected to be offered as standard.
Powering the new Suzuki S1000 and S1000F will be the same 999cc inline-four engine seen on the GSX-R1000 but in a slightly different avatar. While the sporty Gixxer 1000 is tuned more for the track, the street friendly Suzuki S1000 and S1000F will have its ECU tweaked to suit street-riding and touring, respectively.
In terms of positioning, the Suzuki S1000 will compete with the likes of Kawasaki Z1000, while the Suzuki S1000F will take on Kawasaki Ninja 1000; and are expected to be launched around the Rs 13 lakh mark. Suzuki Motorcycle India sold close to 280 super bikes in the country in the financial year 2014-15 and with the introduction of these new models is hoping to increase this number to 400 units this fiscal.
