What would one do if he/she were a race car driver who met with an accident and lost his/her legs? Would they quit racing because of their physical condition or will they fight the situation to race again? I am sure they would want to the race again, return to the arena they belong to, despite the misfortune that has struck. One such case is of Alex Zanardi, the former Indycar & F1 racing star who has set another example of human endeavour and perseverance for us by winning his third paralympic gold in the hand-cycling race.
The Italian race car driver lost both his legs to a car accident 15 years ago, when he was racing in the CART series. Post that, he was not able to race in open-wheel racing. However, the fighter that he is, he returned to racing in 2004 with a touring car that was modified to support the use of his prosthetic feet. He finished seventh in this first race and later went on to win his first WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) race in 2005. He registered several other victories in the WTCC till he retired from the sport in 2009.
With his latest victory at the 2016 Paralympics, the former racer has proved that he can race anything that he wants to victory -- be it a race car or a carbon-fibre, hand-propelled tricycle. Back in 2012, he won a silver and two golds in the London games.
Zanardi has 41 Grand Prix starts to his name, which includes two CART titles from 1997 and 1998. He is an inspiration for everyone and living proof that fighters keep fighting, no matter what!
