The Lawrence pays homage to the man who put the bespoke brand on the map

How does a motorcycle brand earn itself the stature of the ‘Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles’? By conceptualising hand-built bikes with generous use of exquisite materials, and of course, a rich heritage to go with. Brough Superior’s fifth motorcycle, christened Lawrence, is a fitting example of this. Named after T.E Lawrence, an author, academic, military officer, and a Brough Superior collector, the bike is an ode to the ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, as he was known around the globe.

The Brough Superior Lawrence is based on Lawrence’s own SS100, while the model’s ‘fluid and muscular’ lines are inspired by the Bedouin dagger that the man carried. As vintage and old-school the bike looks, it is a thoroughly modern machine, helped by with top-of-the-shelf equipment.

For starters, the Lawrence uses a liquid-cooled, 998cc engine belting out 101.9PS at 9600rpm and 87Nm at 7300rpm which is a bit underwhelming for a bike like this. The motor acts as a stressed member in the frame constructed using machined titanium. The subframe is built using the exotic material to keep the kerb mass in check. Even the 17-litre fuel tank is made of carbon fibre to further allow weight reduction.

The theme extends to the other bits of the bike as well. The Fior-style fork and the swingarm are made using a single piece of aluminum each. Heck, even the wheels are made up of the same material to reduce the amount of unsprung weight.

There are no corners cut when it comes to the equipment. Dropping the anchor is UK’s brake specialist Beringer twin 320mm stainless discs, paired with the brand’s four-pot callipers at the front and a 230mm disc with a two-pot caliper at the rear. The front and rear monoshock come with preload and rebound adjustability.

The Brough Superior Lawrence tips the scales at 200kg, which is fairly light for a cruiser of this capacity. Though there’s no official word on the top speed, the speedometer goes all the way up to 290kmph. Considering the original SS100 was capable of achieving 160kmph back in the 1920s, this doesn't come as a surprise.

Limited to only 188 examples (in remembrance of Lawrence’s birth year, 1888), the bike carries a hefty price tag of GBP66,000 ( roughly Rs 66 lakh)! Brough’s lineup has some outlandish motorcycles, including the AMB 001, a motorcycle built in partnership with Aston Martin. There’s even a scrambler for those who have the guts (and the moolah) to take the exquisite beauty off the beaten path. But then again, even Rolls-Royce has the Cullinan, don’t they?
