Some rides give you photographs, others give you stories. The Sikkim Expedition gave me something more lasting – it changed how I think about riding, preparation, and even expectation in itself.
I went in expecting hardship: cold strong enough to knock me down, breathlessness at altitude, snow-covered roads, and physical exhaustion. None of that arrived the way I imagined. Instead, Sikkim challenged assumptions rather than endurance. The absence of snow, the comfort of good hotels, and a pace that stayed engaging across eight days proved that difficulty doesn’t always look the way you expect it to.

Even the 200-odd kg Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, which I expected to feel heavy and intimidating, surprised me with balance and confidence. It turned hairpins and off-road patches into moments of joy rather than tension.
The ride has also forced a change in my light-traveller mindset, and with it – also my misplaced confidence in my tolerance of cold temperatures. That lesson has rewired how I pack, forever. Minimalism has its own place, and the mountains are exactly not it.

On the saddle, the learning went deeper. Coming from the Western Ghats, I thought I understood mountain riding. Sikkim showed me scale – sharper hairpins, steeper gradients, narrower roads, and cliffs that removed any margin for error or ego.
And then there was the journey itself – Zuluk’s views (and freezing cold), Tsomgo lake’s stillness, Gangtok’s energy, and Pelling’s quiet views of Kanchenjunga. It was eight days of early mornings, shared miles, silent stretches, and conversations that only happen after long rides.

The 2025 Royal Enfield tour of Sikkim didn’t end when the engines switched off. It continues in how I ride, how I pack, and how I approach every road that follows. Some rides stay on the map, this one stayed with me.
