Before Sikkim, my riding experience was shaped largely by the Western Ghats – particularly the surrounding areas of Nashik, Mumbai, Pune. Twisty roads, elevation changes, and familiar mountain rhythms had given me confidence. I thought I understood mountain riding, but boy, was I wrong!
Sikkim showed me the difference between Ghats and the Himalayas. At first glance, the terrain felt familiar. Curves, climbs, descents – it all seemed recognizable. But everything in Sikkim was on a much larger scale. Hairpins were sharper and more frequent, ascents more inclined, and descents far steeper. Roads narrowed dramatically, often leaving no room for error.

Add endless cliffs dropping away beside you, and the sense of risk becomes very real, very quickly. This forced a change in my mindset. Speed became irrelevant, precision mattered. I learned to approach every turn with intent. Setting up early, choosing clean lines, and committing smoothly.
Standing on the pegs of my Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 over the rough stuff became second nature, improving balance and control. Smooth throttle inputs mattered more than brute power. I also became far more aware of fatigue. In terrain like this, even small lapses can snowball. Knowing when to pause, hydrate, and reset became part of riding, not a break from it.

The biggest shift was mental. The Himalayas command respect – something only calmness, consistency, and humility can achieve. I’ve returned from Sikkim smoother, more aware, and far more disciplined – at least in my head for now.
