Before the Royal Enfield tour of Sikkim 2025 even began, I had already written the story in my head. I expected the ride to be physically exhausting, the kind that slowly chips away at your body. Cold mornings, aching muscles, maybe even falling sick felt inevitable. With high altitudes on the route, I was also prepared to feel breathless and drained, especially around Nathula Pass and the town of Zuluk – both perched quite up in the Himalayas.
December in Sikkim, in my imagination, also meant one thing: snow. None of that played out the way I expected. There was no snow at all, not even a flake. And despite the altitude, I never felt breathless or overwhelmed by the lack of oxygen. The cold was still real though, and it tested me to my limits. More on that later…

Another assumption I carried was about my bike. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 weighs almost 200kg and is known to be top-heavy. I expected it to feel intimidating on sharp hairpins and tricky sections. However, in reality, it felt balanced and predictable, especially once on the move.
The endless hairpins were a joy, not a challenge, and even the off-road patches were fun rather than nerve-racking. The only time the weight truly showed was while lifting the bike off the side stand, especially because of how much it leans. It required the occasional help of another person.

I also expected boredom. After all, ~650km over eight days sounded slow – but that never happened. Every day brought new roads, changing weather, and constantly shifting scenery. Even accommodation defied expectations, mostly 3-4 star hotels instead of the rustic stays I had imagined, with Pelling being the lone homestay exception – as it was the smallest, most remote town in the entire trip.
Sikkim didn’t exhaust me, it surprised me – that has made the ride unforgettable. And so did my mistake of underpacking…to be continued in part 2.
