Despite a significant price hike, the 2022 MT-15 misses out on some crucial updates

We had broken the news last week that Yamaha will be launching the new MT-15 Version 2.0 in India on April 11 and we have been proved right!

What's Its Price? Who Are Its Rivals?

Prices for the 2022 Yamaha MT-15 start at Rs 1,59,900 (ex-showroom), which is a premium of around Rs 12,000 over the previous model. The MT-15 Version 2.0 competes against the KTM 125 Duke, which retails for a premium of Rs 10,000 despite being down on both power and features.

What's New?

The most noticeable update on the 2022 MT-15 is the inclusion of a 37mm USD fork, the same unit as on the 2022 Yamaha R15 V4. Gone is the old box-section swingarm, which had received a lot of flak and in comes a cast aluminium swingarm borrowed from the R15. Additionally, the new Yamaha MT-15 also gets a revised digital instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity for call, SMS am email alerts. However, navigation has been given a miss. It also gets two new shades called Cyan Storm and Racing Blue, while the previous colours – Ice Fluo-Vermillion and Metallic Black – have been carried forward on the MT-15 Version 2.0.

What’s Unchanged?

It continues to be powered by the same 155cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine producing 18.4PS at 10,000rpm and 14.1Nm at 7500rpm. While the engine displacement is the same power and torque figures are down by 0.1PS but torque is up 0.2Nm. Yamaha haven’t stated any reason for the drop in power, but we suspect it to be done with an intent to improve fuel efficiency and the extra torque should help improve low-end performance a bit. The 6-speed gearbox with slipper clutch is also the same unit as before. The deltabox frame, monoshock suspension and braking hardware also remain unchanged. While we were expecting some visual difference between the Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0 and the older bike, the Japanese brand hasn’t made any changes.

The 2022 Yamaha MT-15 still misses out on a dual-channel ABS, which we think is unacceptable considering the safety implications, as well as the performance capability of the bike. Unlike the Yamaha R15 V4, the MT-15 Version 2.0 also doesn’t feature traction control and quickshifter. In our opinion, Yamaha India should have offered these as an optional extra or introduced them as part of a premium variant.

Zig Says

The 2022 Yamaha MT-15 receives a bunch of noticeable updates, which should make it an even better bike. However, missing out on dual-channel ABS at this price point is disappointing. If the styling would have been updated on the lines of the Yamaha MT-03, then the desirability factor of the new bike would have increased a lot. Despite the updates, the Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0 still feels a bit half baked.
