This new 890 model could sit between the Duke and the Adventure

An interesting-looking KTM bike has been spied testing overseas, and we believe it could be the 890 SMT model. It would bridge the gap between the mental 890 Duke naked and the 890 Adventure, offering a middle ground between the two. Think of it like a modern rendition of the KTM 990 SMT.

The test mule sports a design that borrows elements from the two aforementioned bikes. The front end and fairing is similar to the ADV, while the tank and 17-inch alloys resemble the Duke, with the latter probably chosen to maintain the sporty riding dynamics. Besides, the supermoto nature is clear from the flat seat and the sleek tail end.

Like the alloys, the suspension and brakes look like the Duke’s. These comprise twin discs up front and WP suspension at both ends.

Underneath all this would be KTM’s 889cc twin-cylinder engine. The output would probably be around 110PS and 90Nm, the same as the 890 Duke. Expect the bike to also feature extensive riding aids like IMU-based traction control, cornering ABS, and wheelie control, among other things.

The official launch of the bike seems far away, and even farther when you think of the Indian market. However, KTM is expected to launch the 890 Duke here next year which, if a success, could carve the way for more KTM big bikes in India.

When it does arrive, though, the 890 SMT will rival the BMW F 900 XR.
