Maruti Suzuki appears to be sharpening its SUV strategy for India, and the next chapter might bring an interesting nameplate from the brand’s international portfolio.
If the rumour mill is to be believed, Maruti is working on another Compact SUV, which might be christened the Maruti Escudo.
The SUV is expected to slot right between the Brezza and the Grand Vitara, filling a crucial gap in the brand’s ever-growing SUV portfolio and will be sold through their Arena dealerships. Here’s what we know:
The new compact SUV, which is believed to be codenamed Y17, is reportedly being developed as a direct rival to the hot sellers like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Honda Elevate. It is expected to be underpinned by Suzuki’s Global C platform, the same architecture on which the Grand Vitara is based. However, this new SUV could likely have a longer wheelbase and more space to make it competitive while still being feature-rich.
From what we gather, the upcoming Escudo will be a 5-seater aimed at customers who want something more premium than the Brezza but are not ready to stretch to the Grand Vitara. This also gives Maruti an SUV positioned to appeal to both the compact and mid-size SUV buyers, in short, the Escudo could help Maruti grab another slice from the sales-figure pie chart.
While Maruti Suzuki is absolutely tight-lipped about their upcoming offering, we can expect the following things, considering Maruti's current set of offerings:
Powertrain: Maruti is likely to keep things familiar under the hood, expect the 1.5-litre K15C NA petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech to be the go-to motor. It’s already proven in multiple Maruti models and strikes a good balance between performance and efficiency. Transmission options could include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Maruti could skip the strong-hybrid powertrain (as seen in the Grand Vitara) to keep prices in check and avoid overlapping too much with the flagship. However, we could expect a CNG variant making its way, given Maruti’s recent focus on expanding green fuel options.
Cabin & Features: Inside, Maruti is expected to raise the bar. A new dashboard layout with soft-touch materials, dual-tone upholstery, and a more upmarket feel could be on the cards. Features-wise, it should pack all the segment staples, including a 10.25-inch (or bigger) touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, and push-button start. A panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, and connected car tech (with Suzuki Connect) could also be on offer, especially considering how most competitors now offer these as must-haves.
Safety: In terms of safety, the Escudo is expected to offer six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), hill hold assist, and all-wheel disc brakes as standard. With the competition ramping up safety standards, Maruti could also consider throwing in features like a 360-degree camera, and maybe even a basic ADAS suite to future-proof the offering, though the latter may only come in much later. We also expect it to get a 5-star BNCAP rating, considering Maruti's recent focus on safety.
The name Escudo has traditionally been associated with Suzuki’s international iterations of the Vitara, particularly in the Japanese market. Interestingly, it was inspired by "Escudo" which was the name of Portugal’s currency before the Euro took over, giving it a unique, almost exotic ring.
Maruti Suzuki had trademarked this name sometime last year, which is why there’s growing speculation that the upcoming compact SUV could carry this badge. Of course, there’s been no official confirmation yet, so take it with a pinch of salt… or a dash of excitement, especially if you’re the kind who geeks out over car names.
The upcoming Maruti compact SUV, whether it ends up being called Escudo or something else entirely, is expected to debut before Diwali 2025. And it’s not the only launch on Maruti's radar.
The brand is also gearing up to launch its first born-electric vehicle, the e Vitara, around the same timeline, which will be produced at Suzuki's new facility in Bechraji, Gujarat.
One thing’s clear: Maruti Suzuki’s SUV game is evolving rapidly, and the possible introduction of the Escudo could be just the ace it needs to dominate the compact SUV battlefield.
With the Escudo, or whatever name it finally wears, Maruti Suzuki seems very keen on gaining a share of the compact SUV segment.
And while there’s no official word yet on the Escudo’s name, specs, or launch date, all signs point to a pre-Diwali 2025 debut. Until then, we will be keeping our ears to the ground and eyes on camouflaged test mules.
