2026 Toyota Hilux: Exterior

The ninth-generation Hilux has gone through a comprehensive redesign that makes it look sharper, tougher and more butch than before. Upfront, you get to see a massive body-coloured grille, with a piano-black strip atop. It also features LED headlamps with a slimmer profile, and a new bumper with sharp cuts and creases and a tough-looking silver skid plate.

From the side profile as well, it looks visually taller with elements like thick wheel arch cladding, a sharkfin antenna and a ‘Hilux’ badge on the front doors. For the Indian market, Toyota is only offering the dual-cab version, which has a smaller loading bay but adds a second row of seating.

The rear-end also looks all-new with LED headlamps, a chunky bumper with cladding and a ‘TOYOTA’ sticker on the tailgate. Another interesting point to note is that nowhere inside or outside the Hilux will you see the Toyota logo, and instead the pickup truck features the retro-cool font with the text in all places.

The new Hilux can be had in Z colour options: Sulphor Metallic, Platinum Pearl White, Attitude Black, Ash, Emotional Red and Super White

2026 Toyota Hilux: Interior

Inside as well, you get a completely new cabin which now gets a rugged and tough look compared to the older version. The dashboard is all new and gets a layered design with multiple elements. In the centre, there is a larger touchscreen infotainment system, while a digital instrument cluster and a brand-new squared-off steering wheel make for a more premium experience for the driver.

It also gets an all-black colour theme inside with leatherette seat upholstery, and plenty of storage spaces all around, including two gloveboxes.

2026 Toyota Hilux: Features & Safety

In terms of the equipment on offer, the new Hilux features a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-speaker JBL sound system. Other features include powered and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charger and connected car technology.

Safety also gets a significant boost with features like Level 2 ADAS, 7 airbags, electronic stability control, all-wheel disc brakes, tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, 360-degree camera and front and rear parking sensors.

2026 Toyota Hilux: Powertrain

Under the hood, the new Hilux is powered by the same 2.8-litre mild-hybrid diesel engine as we have seen in the Fortuner before. Here are the Hilux’s detailed specifications:

Engine

2.8-litre diesel

Transmission

6-speed AT

Power (PS)

204 PS

Torque (Nm)

500 Nm (AT)

Drivetrain

Four-wheel drive

MT- Manual Transmission, AT- Automatic Transmission (torque converter)

The Hilux also gets some neat off-road tricks like 10 terrain modes, front and rear locking differentials, a 700 mm water wading depth.

Rivals

The Toyota Hilux has only one rival in the Isuzu V-Cross, but it can be an alternative to body-on-frame SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner and MG Majestor.

ZigSays…

In a market where global carmakers are often hesitant to introduce their flagship products, it's refreshing to see Toyota bring the new Hilux to India so soon after its global debut. The pickup has gradually carved out a niche following, and this latest generation builds on its strengths while becoming a far more practical companion for everyday use. That said, its premium pricing and the absence of a secure, enclosed cargo area are likely to keep it from appealing to the masses. Instead, the Hilux is expected to remain an enthusiast's choice rather than evolving into a true all-rounder.
