Volkswagen has unveiled the first facelift of its mid-size SUV, the Taigun, in the Indian market. The facelift brings refreshed exterior styling along with revisions and updates in the feature list. The new Taigun can be had in seven variants: Comfortline, Highline, Highline Plus, GT Line, Topline, GT Plus Chrome, and GT Plus Sport.
There are two engine options on offer: a 1-litre turbo petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol. It comes loaded with all the modern features that you would expect in a car of this segment. If you were eagerly waiting for the new Taigun, here's a breakdown of what each variant brings to the table so that you know exactly what you will be paying for:
Available with:

The Comfortline variant is the base variant in the Taigun line-up and is available only with the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine and a manual transmission. You get all the essentials covered along with some modern features as well. A thing to note is that you get automatic climate control and a 6-speaker audio system right from the base variant. Another point to appreciate is a strong baseline of standard safety equipment. There’s not much to complain about, but considering some rivals like the Kushaq and Sierra, the base model could have done with slightly more tech onboard.

The Highline Plus is the mid variant in the Taigun’s variant lineup. You get a lot of equipment in this variant, which could make it one of the most value-for-money variants once the prices for the car are revealed. Most of the features offered here are to increase convenience, like automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, push-button start, auto-dimming IRVM, and electrically foldable ORVMs.
This variant also offers a single-pane sunroof, while the panoramic unit is reserved for the top-end variants. For buyers who don’t wish to push their budgets but still wish to have a taste of modern features and convenience, the Highline Plus will be a good variant to settle on.
Available with:
1-litre TSI turbo-petrol MT
1-litre TSI turbo-petrol AT
Feature Highlights: (In addition to Highline Plus):
All-black interior theme
Soul fabric seat upholstery with London Grey stitching
Red ambient lighting

Blacked out ORVMs
Glossy black inserts in the bumper
Black front and rear diffuser
17-inch black painted alloy wheels
Black painted strip on the rear bumper

The GT Line variant carries most of the features from the mid-spec Highline Plus variant. What it offers extra are exterior sporty enhancements to justify its GT Line badge. This variant carries a black theme both inside the car and outside, and gets striking elements like 17-inch black alloy wheels, red ambient lighting, and aluminium pedals. This variant will appeal to buyers who want the sporty blacked-out look but don’t need the extra performance from the GT Plus Sport variant.
Available with:
1-litre TSI turbo petrol MT
1-litre TSI turbo petrol AT
Feature Highlights: (In addition to GT Line):
Dual-tone interior theme
10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with active info display
Connected car technology
6-way power-adjustable front seats
Ventilated front seats
Panoramic sunroof
Amplifier and subwoofer
Footwell illumination
Storm Grey leatherette upholstery
Connected LED light bar with illuminated VW logo
Rear illuminated VW logo
Chrome windowline garnish
17-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels

The Topline variant is the top-of-the-line trim for the 1-litre engine models. This variant offers all the modern features and latest tech that’s being offered in the Taigun lineup. You get Volkswagen’s new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with turn-by-turn navigation, a panoramic sunroof, amplifier and subwoofer for enhanced audio quality, 6-way power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, and leatherette upholstery.
This variant should appeal more to buyers who wish to own a car with all the modern and fancy features. In terms of styling, you get 17-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels and illuminated VW logos at the front and rear. This variant has got everything covered, but if you want to have those sporty GT styling elements and a powerful engine, check out the next two variants.
Available with:
1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol DCT
Feature Highlights: (In addition to Topline):
GT branding on the exterior
GT badge on the steering wheel
Dual-tone grey and black leatherette seat upholstery with red stitching
Red ambient lighting
GT welcome message in the Infotainment system
Aluminium pedals
Red brake calipers
Dual-tone exterior colour options with black roof

The GT Plus Chrome variant carries forward all the tech and features from the Topline variant. What is different here are multiple GT brandings on the exterior and interior to differentiate it from the regular Taigun. The brake callipers are also painted red, while on the inside, you get red ambient lighting. Also, this variant is exclusively available with the more powerful 1.5-litre TSI engine mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission while looking and feeling almost identical to the Topline variant.
Available with:
1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol DCT
Feature Highlights: (In addition to GT Plus Chrome):
GT badge on the steering wheel with red accent
All-black interior theme
Black leatherette seat upholstery with Flash Red stitching
Blacked out ORVMs
Glossy black inserts in the bumper
Black front and rear diffuser
17-inch black painted alloy wheels
Black painted strip on the rear bumper

The GT Plus Sport variant is equipped similarly to the GT Plus Chrome variant with not much to differentiate between the two, except for a sportier blacked-out aesthetic. Picking between them is therefore a matter of personal preference between a classier and elegant look or a more aggressive and performance-oriented feel.
The new Volkswagen Taigun is expected to be priced from Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom), while the higher variants may cost upwards of Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom). Volkswagen has not yet announced an official launch date, but expect it to go on sale later this month.

Once launched, the Volkswagen Taigun will continue to take on popular cars of the segment like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Renault Duster, Tata Sierra, Maruti Victoris and Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, Honda Elevate, Citroen Aircross and the MG Astor.
Volkswagen has smartly planned all the variants of the new Taigun. You get a decent level of equipment right from the base trim, which ensures that each type of buyer gets a taste of modern features. The diverse list of variants, engine and transmission options will make the new Taigun appeal to an even larger audience, which means there is a Taigun available for all types of buyers.
If your requirement demands a family mid-size SUV that you can use for your daily urban commute, the Highline variant offers a pretty decent list of equipment, whereas if you’re a buyer who does not want to leave any box unticked and wants a sporty or elegant appearance, the top-end GT Plus Chrome and Sport variants are for sure a good pick as well. However, we feel that the Highline Plus variant could turn out to be a well-balanced option with good levels of equipment that covers all essential bases.
But if you’re interested in buying a Taigun with the 1.5-litre engine, you have to stretch for the top-spec GT Plus trims. On this front, we wish Volkswagen had offered this powertrain in a lower-spec package to cater to enthusiasts on a tighter budget.
