The Altroz is a very well-equipped hatchback, but it is not perfect! Here’s why…

No car is truly perfect, and while the recently launched Tata Altroz facelift is really well-equipped and won’t disappoint you, there are some misses or imperfections that stop it from becoming the perfect hatchback. In this report, we take you through the pros and cons of the Tata Altroz, leaving you to decide if you can ignore some of its cons and rather focus on its strengths.

Let’s begin!

Design

What we like:

The Tata Altroz’s design has been given a slight makeover, and the update modernises the styling with new elements. The fascia looks sharp with the sleek twin-pod LED headlights and sleek DRLs. The bumper has been updated and gets functional airdams that channel air for better brake cooling.

The silhouette remains the same, but flush door handles and 16-inch alloys look nice. At the rear, the connected LED taillights are the biggest update and elevate the Altroz’s modern appeal.

What we don’t:

To some keen observers, the alloy wheel design might look similar to the styled steel wheels made for EVs.

Interior

What we like:

The new additions inside uplift the look of the cabin. The two-spoke steering wheel, big infotainment system, ambient lighting, and touch-sensitive AC panel look modern and appealing. Different textures for the plastics add to the feel-good factor. The addition of soft touch fabric with leatherette on the gear knob and steering wheel accentuate the experience. The seat adjustment allows for a sporty driving position as you get a wide range for height adjustment. Extended support for the thigh further makes the seat feel comfortable.

What we don’t:

The dashboard design might not remain relevant for a long time. Really tall passengers could have a restricted view due to the roof line coming in their line of sight, depending on the seat height. The front central armrest is not at the same level as the armrest on the doors. The map lighting and the toggle switch panel for the sunroof feels wobbly and could have been of better quality.

Space & Practicality

What we like:

There are plenty of storage options with well-thought-out door pockets, dual cupholders (front and rear), spacious glovebox and seatback pockets. Due to the 90-degree opening doors, ingress and egress is easy. The rear seats are extremely comfortable for average-sized adults with segment-best underthigh support. Amenities like rear AC vents and a central armrest ensure comfort over long journeys.

What we don’t:

Despite the scooped-out roofline, tall passengers don’t have enough headroom. Three people cannot be accommodated easily. The middle passenger doesn't get a headrest. The seatback angle could’ve been more reclined for better comfort over long distances.

Features

What we like:

The 10.25-inch touchscreen offers a crisp resolution and is easy to understand while providing quick response times. The unit supports both wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 10.25-inch digital driver’s display not only has multiple views and crisp graphics, but also projects the navigation for the driver. The 8-speaker sound system gives a surround sound-like feel. Amenities like wireless phone charger, voice-assisted electric sunroof, push-button start/stop, auto headlamps and an auto-dimming inside rear view mirror make the cabin a comfortable place to be in.

What we don’t:

While the Altroz gets most of the features that you would want, amenities like auto IRVM, ventilated seats and leatherette upholstery would have truly made it the benchmark in the segment.

Safety

What we like:

It gets plenty of safety features as standard. The list includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts, and electronic stability program (ESP). Higher variants get a tyre pressure monitoring system, hill hold assist, and SOS calling as part of connected car technology. The quality of the 360-degree camera is nice, and you get multiple 2D and 3D modes along with various angles.

The pre-facelifted model was 5-star rated by Global NCAP, and the facelift carries the same platform and bodyshell.

What we don’t:

The integration of the blind spot monitor in the lower variants takes up the entire infotainment display, hence, you can’t see your navigation. No load sensors for the rear seatbelts.

Powertrain

What we like:

The good thing is that the Altroz is offered with a NA petrol, a petrol-CNG, and a diesel engine option. It is the only hatchback in the segment to get a diesel engine. The petrol engine can be had with multiple gearbox options, and its performance is smooth, best suited for regular city commutes. Switching between petrol and CNG is seamless on the go, and the CNG’s performance feels adequate for city runabouts and relaxed highway cruising.

The diesel engine’s performance is effortless. Picks up speed and maintains triple-digit speeds with ease. The manual transmission is easy to use with a light clutch with a progressive release point.

The dual-clutch transmission is very smooth and quick when you want it to be. The paddle shifters with the DCT give you manual control for more involvement in the drive.

What we don’t:

The NA petrol engine gets really noisy at higher RPMs when going for a quick overtake, and its performance feels underpowered for anything other than regular city commutes. The diesel is powerful enough, but falls short in the refinement department. You miss out on the automatic if you want the diesel.

Price And Rivals

The 2025 Altroz facelift is priced Rs 6.89 lakh and Rs 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It competes with hatchbacks like the Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20 and Toyota Glanza.

Clearly, the pros are in plenty and outweigh the cons. The cons might just stop it from becoming the perfect hatchback, but most of them are not good enough to make you change your decision. Rather, they are drawbacks that you will learn to live with. That being said, the Altroz is definitely among the best in its segment, and a hatchback that you can recommend easily.
