The XSR155 is finally in India, and it’s got enthusiasts saying Yes! Yamaha. It completes the 155cc ‘holy trinity’, alongside the R15 V4 and MT-15 V2 (sorry Aerox…and Nmax). Three bikes, one heart (hi Honda fans) – yet wildly different souls. R15 is the razor-sharp track warrior, MT-15 V2 the naked streetfighter, and XSR155 – the neo retro roadster. Whether you chase apexes, carve through traffic, or just want to cruise in style – Yamaha’s 155 platform now offers a flavour for every kind of rider.
If your heart beats at higher revs, you live for apexes, and are keen to feel that (mini) supersport vibe – the Yamaha R15 V4 is your ticket. Here, the 155cc single makes 18.4PS and 14.2Nm. The full fairing, committed posture, low-set clip-ons, rear-set foot-pegs, and quickshifter (up-only) – make it absolutely clear in its intentions.

It’s for riders who want elbows out and knee-down in each corner (in a safe environment like a track of course), and those who don’t mind sacrificing some everyday comfort for thrill (you need to be fairly fit if you have to keep the back and wrist pain at bay). At Rs 1,94,412 (ex-showroom) for the top-spec R15 M 'Icon Performance', the price is also on the steeper side for this segment, but you’re paying for performance and experience.
Want the performance of the R15 but in a more usable package for everyday and occasional weekend blasts? Enter the Yamaha MT-15 V2. The same 155cc makes the same power, but 14.1Nm (0.1Nm less, we doubt anyone will notice). But the more important fact is that it gets a 52 teeth rear sprocket, 4-teeth larger than the R15 - for better acceleration at the cost of outright top speed.

The styling’s clearly inspired from the bigger MTs (dare we say almost exactly the same headlight on all of ‘em). It ditches the clip-ons for a single-piece wide handlebar, and the ergonomics are more forgiving. It feels lighter to manoeuvre, is practical for city use, yet still capable on twisty roads. This makes the MT-15 ideal for the rider who wants thrill plus daily usability, who rides to work, enjoys weekend hits, but doesn't want the Hunchback (of Notre Dame) posture. The MT gives you that sweet spot of performance and practicality. And, this platform is known for its frugality, so even your wallet won’t go…MT.
We got the Yamaha XSR155 before GTA6 (come on, Rockstar, please); and that Rs 1,49,990 introductory (ex-showroom) price makes it a sweet sweet deal. Not to anyone’s surprise, you have the trusty ol’ 155cc mill here, with the same output figures as the R15.

However, the look is totally different: round LED headlamp, ribbed single-piece seat, retro tear-drop shaped tank, and styling that makes it stand out. If you’re the guy (or gal) who wants a motorcycle with character, one that turns heads, and you ride for style as much as substance, this is the one.
Choose the R15 V4 if your priority is that typical supersport look, performance, and ergonomics for those who are ready to be…commited.
Go for the MT-15 V2 if you want a superb blend of everyday usability + sporty fun.
Opt for the XSR155 if you value style, uniqueness and want Yamaha’s proven 155 platform but with a vibe-centric twist. Oh, its riding posture is pretty comfy too!
