The on-paper similarities between the two translate into a nail-biting real world comparison

The Tata Nexon EV recently got an update in the form of a facelift, which brought new-gen motors and different battery packs. Its rival, the Mahindra XUV400, also received a mid-life update, albeit without any changes to its powertrain. So it was time we bought the two EVs together for a proper real-world performance comparison. Both sport very similar on-paper specifications, which made way for a very close, nerve wracking real-world performance battle. Before taking a look at the performance figures, here are the respective specifications:

The Nexon EV also gets a less powerful 129PS medium range powertrain. But to keep the comparison fair, we’ve tested its long range 143PS powertrain. In terms of outright output, the XUV400 beats the Nexon EV, but the latter has a bigger battery pack. The bigger battery corresponds to a bigger claimed range figure, but this test is all about speed!

Despite sporting a significantly higher torque figure, the XUV400 doesn’t quite translate that advantage in the real world. It beats the Nexon EV in a sprint from nought to 100kmph, but just by three tenths of a second. Even the quarter mile time has the same difference, with the two sporting nearly identical speeds.
