It gets the same battery-swappable tech being tested in India

Honda has unveiled a bunch of new products including the CMX1100 Rebel and the CL500 Scrambler at the EICMA 2022, and one of the major showcases was the Honda EM1 e: electric scooter.  Interestingly, the ‘EM’ stands for electric moped; however, it does not get any pedals.

While the specifications and details about the EM1 e: are still under wraps, we do know that it will get a hub motor and is meant for short city commutes suggesting that it is a low-speed scooter with top speed limited to 50kmph. Electrified by Honda’s Mobile Power Pack (MPP) swappable battery tech, the e-scooter will claim a range of 40km. Yes, the range isn’t much, but if paired with a widespread swappable battery network, it makes good sense for commutes as the down time for charging is equivalent to refueling a petrol-powered scooter.

In terms of design, the EM1 e: gets design language seemingly inspired by the Honda U-Go e-scooter. Even the underpinnings seem to have been taken from the U-Go.

The EM1 e: will be the first electric offering by Honda in Europe, and will debut in the continent some time after July 2023. The bigger question is, will this be the e-moped that Honda will launch in India? Well, it is quite unlikely, and instead, Honda will bring out a product developed from the ground up, specifically meant for the Indian and select southeast asian markets. That said, the battery swapping tech that the EM1 e: features will be shared with the upcoming Honda EV. In fact, it is the same as the one Honda has been testing in India on the Benly e electric scooter

The Japanese bikemaker plans to introduce 10 or more electric two-wheelers globally by 2025, followed by the carbon neutrality goal by 2050. You can read more about Honda’s green plans here.
