Many performance cars today come with adjustable suspension settings. Read on to know what they are for

Traditionally different cars came with suspension setups designed for the kind of car it is meant to be. For example, luxury cars come with soft suspension setups designed to simply glide over broken uneven road surfaces and cosset its occupants in a universe separate from the real world, but that is not to say they have terrible handling traits. Sports cars come with stiff suspension setups to give razor sharp ride and handling combined with powerful engines for enthusiastic driving. Normal road cars come with a suspension setup designed for a comfortable ride. Some road cars designed for enthusiastic driving come with suspension setups designed to compromise comfort for responsive ride and handling.

But what if you want the best of both worlds? What if you want a comfortable ride most of the time in a sports car but when in the mood want the car to handles like a dream. Car makers realised what customers wanted and came up with an electric system called adjustable sport suspension. Cars with adjustable sport suspension come with a button or knob located somewhere in the dashboard that can be used to improve the cars’ handling when spirited driving is called for. After work when you are tired and want a comfortable ride home, the suspension can be set to comfort mode. What the sport button on a car does is stiffen up the suspension, increase throttle response and sharpen up the steering response.

Ideally, there are two settings in adjustable sports suspensions ‘comfort’ and ‘sport’. But car makers usually provide three or four settings for varying levels of compromise between comfort and sportiness from a car’s suspension.  Some cars come with ‘comfort’ for a comfortable ride, ‘sport’ for a slightly stiffer suspension and improved ride and handling, ‘Sport+’ for a stiff suspension and sharp handling with improved throttle response.

Adjustable sport suspension is a great feature because even if a person buys a sports car they would like a comfortable ride because in the real world roads are not as smooth as those in sports car advertisements. And when they are in the mood for enthusiastic driving (for which they bought sports cars in the first place) and want to extract the maximum amount of performance out of their cars they can do so at the touch of a button.
