The test mule looks every bit the smaller sibling of the Thruxton 1200

Back when the Triumph Speed 400 was launched, speculations about what other bikes this new platform could spawn were rife. Now, we did see a Triumph Tiger 400 render, but what we were more excited about was hands down the possibility of a Thruxton 400. And guess what! A couple of months down the line, the Triumph Thruxton 400 has been spied testing already.

The first glance will reveal that this bike looks like an authentic cafe racer with the trademark Triumph styling in the headlight, clip-on handlebars, rearset footpegs and bar-end mirrors. That said, neither the clip-ons nor the rearsets look too aggressively placed. The Thruxton, at the end of the day, was not very committed in terms of ergonomics and we expect the Thruxton 400 to be no different.

Interestingly though, the bike gets a metal bash plate. And the front fender’s rear is longer, going beyond the bottom of the radiator. The Speed 400’s fender, meanwhile, is much shorter. Moving to the middle, the 398cc liquid-cooled engine, making 40PS and 37.5Nm, will likely be in the same tune as the Speed 400. From here on, the bike remains aesthetically similar to the Speed 400 with the seat, grab rail, and even the overall size should be similar to the Speed.

These things said, the bike is likely still a prototype and don’t expect it to be here in the next year. An EICMA unveil (November 2024) followed by an India launch could be on the cards. When that happens, expect it to cost around Rs 30,000 over the Speed 400. Its price will then be in the same ballpark as the Scrambler 400 X.  The closest rival to it would then be the Husqvarna Vitpilen 250, which was actually recently spied testing as well.
