  • Changes for the updated Yaris are largely cosmetic.
  • Inside, it gets an updated upholstery design and infotainment system.
  • India-spec Yaris likely to retain the existing 107PS 1.5-litre petrol engine with manual and automatic options.
  • Facelifted Yaris expected to launch in India in 2021.

This here is the facelifted Toyota Yaris, also known as the Vios in select international markets. It packs a more premium face, a slightly revised interior and more features as well. Can this help the Yaris become more popular in its segment? Let’s find out.

First impressions are good, courtesy the updated face which looks similar to a Lexus. The Yaris’ grille mimics Lexus’ spindle grille and it’s flanked by LED headlamps, which is a first for the sedan. The creases on the fog lamp housing lend it a sporty appearance. Changes in profile are limited to restyled dual-tone alloy wheels while the rear end looks similar to the existing Yaris.

The changes on the inside are more conservative and the Yaris only features a redesigned upholstery and an updated infotainment system. Other features like cruise control, steering mounted audio controls, cruise control, powered driver’s seat, a multi-info display and a rear sunshade have been retained. Safety features include seven airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors as well as electronic stability control.

Mechanically, the Yaris remains unchanged. That means, the international-spec car retains its 98PS 1.3-litre and 106PS 1.5-litre petrol engines. The India-spec model could continue to utilise the 107PS/140Nm 1.5-litre petrol engine with either a 6-speed manual or CVT.

The facelifted Yaris is expected to reach India in 2021. While these upgrades give the Yaris a premium look, it all boils down to pricing. And we don’t expect it to come cheap with prices likely to start from Rs 9 lakh (ex-showroom). Its rivals include the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, VW Vento, Skoda Rapid, and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz
