Recently, a trailer truck full of Toyota’s Rush SUV was spotted near West Bengal. This led to rumours that the Japanese carmaker was planning to launch the SUV in our passenger car market. However, Toyota has denied the rumours and it seems like the transporter truck was heading to a nearby country where the Rush is sold.
Based on the Diahatsu Terios, the Toyota Rush has been around for more than 20 years. With a tall stance, dimensions similar to the Mahindra Scorpio and a third row of seats, the Rush seems like the perfect SUV for a developing nation like ours. Sadly, it is sold in most other Asian markets except ours.
Like the Scorpio, the Rush is based on an old-school ladder frame chassis. It is offered with a single engine option - a 1.5-litre petrol unit that produces 104PS of power and 134Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Although Toyota has no plans of offering the Rush for our domestic market, it will launch a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza as part of a partnership with Suzuki for model sharing. But before that, Toyota plans to launch its version of the Baleno hatchback called the Glanza. Read more about it here. The two Japanese carmakers have also announced a mid-size SUV to compete with the Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500 and the upcoming MG Hector. However, the timeline for the same is yet to be revealed.
