In the wake of the recent recall of over 3,800 Vento sedans by Volkswagen, Skoda have also announced that they will not be selling their Rapid sedan with the 1.5 TDI engine and manual transmission. VW had announced the recall because according to tests conducted by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India), the 1.5-litre TDI engine had inconsistent carbon monoxide emissions. However, according to the German manufacturer, the incident was in no way related to the global NOx emission scandal.
Skoda is under the VW group and shares engines and power trains with Volkswagen’s cars like the Polo and the Vento. In addition, Rapid’s manual transmission variants also sport the same powertrain as the Vento. Hence, the variants of the Rapid powered by the 1.5 TDI engine coupled with the manual transmission will not be sold as of now but sales are said to resume once the emission issue has been settled. However, the aforementioned powertrain is the only one affected and other variants powered by the 1.6 MPI engine and the 1.5 TDI AT will continue to be sold.
