The new EV powertrain consists of a permanent magnet AC motor with a dust- and water-proof battery system meeting IP67 standards. It will also feature smart regenerative braking that uses energy generated under braking to charge the battery on the go. Tata aims to target upto 300km of range for the Nexon EV to alleviate range anxiety. Tata will also offer an 8-year warranty on these powertrains.

In addition to this, Tata Motors has also rolled out the #TheUltimateElectricDrive campaign. It will feature celebrities Milind Soman and Ankita Konwar zipping from Manali to Leh, encountering different terrains and weather conditions in a Nexon EV and sharing their experience.

Tata currently has 85 chargers in 13 cities across nine states. It plans to expand that number substantially with its partnership with Tata Power. In this partnership, the duo will install 300 fast-charging points by the end of 2020 across five metro cities: Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The first 50 will be compliant with Bharat Standard, which means they will be a 15kW system, while the later batch will comprise of 30-50kW fast chargers. Thus, the introduction of the Ziptron powertrain matches with Tata’s electric expansion plans since the more powerful motors will demand faster charging capabilities.

The Nexon EV is expected to be priced between Rs 15 lakh to Rs 17 lakh, which is quite a hefty premium over its current ICE counterpart (Rs 6.58 lakh to Rs 11.10 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi). Following the Nexon EV will be the improved Tigor and Altroz EV, with a fourth mystery model also in the pipeline. Tata is also planning on introducing connected car tech on its future vehicles.
