With the launch of Shine 100, Honda has a lot of big plans with this product. The company is tired of being in the 2nd position and now is all set to climb up the ladder and dethrone the highest selling motorcycle in the country, the Splendor+. With almost identical performance figures the Shine 100 certainly has the Splendor+ in its sights, but how does it fare in every other way on the spec sheet
Engine
Honda Shine 100 is a completely new product built from the ground up with an engine that’s meant to replace the famed Honda “sloper” across the globe soon.. The Splendor+ on the other hand, is still using the same old “sloper” motor (built under license from Honda) with some minor updates over the years such as a switch to fuel injection to keep up with the latest emissions norms.. Both the engines have almost identical power figures with the Shine’s engine closely benchmarked to the Hero SPlendor’s engine. But in theory, there should be a difference in real world performance, as Honda claims the Shine 100 has the best power to weight ratio in the segment.
Underpinnings
The Hero Splendor+ is already a nimble motorcycle weighing just 112 kgs, which has made it an ideal city commuter for almost three decades. However Honda with its new diamond frame chassis and light weight engine, has managed to keep the Shine 100’s weight under 100kgs making it 12 kg lighter. On the suspension side both the bikes get Telescopic fork in the front and twin shock absorbers in the rear. The brakes on this segment of bikes are generally quite basic, and both bikes get a drum brake setup as standard, with a 130mm drum up front on both. But while the Splendor gets a 130mm drum at the rear too, the Shine makes do with a smaller 110mm unit. One thing of note here is that while both bikes come with alloy wheels as standard, the Splendor+ offers tubeless tyres as standard while the Shine 100 gets tube type ones. At least in this department, the Splendor is the better choice.
Dimensions
The Honda Shine 100 and Hero Splendor+ are ideal city commuters with a manageable seat height of 785 mm, however Honda claims the Shine 100 gets a longer and wider seat which should make it more comfortable for both rider and pillion. With a similar ground clearance of 160+ mm city commute should be hassle free and you wouldn't go wrong with either of them.
Features
Feature wise both the bikes get standard tech such as electric start and side stand engine - cut off feature however they do lack on other bells and whistles. If you want more features you can check our top spec Hero Splendor review here.
Price & Verdict
If you are in the market for an affordable, refined, comfortable and low maintenance bike, then the Honda Shine 100 could be an option to consider. Whereas the Splendor+ is in the market for nearly three decades and has its own legacy with a loyal-customer base that might not want to consider other alternatives and will choose the Splendor again.
