TVS Motors, Hero MotoCorp’s Vida and Ather Energy have announced that they will refund the money they had charged the customers for the home charger. This news comes shortly after Ola Electric announced a 130 crore refund for the same reason.
In an investigation carried out by the Ministry of Heavy Industry, the body found that the companies were charging extra for the off-board chargers. Now, as per the new mandate, chargers won’t be considered as an accessory but will be included in the ex-showroom price itself. To comply with this, EV manufacturers have initiated a refund for the charger’s cost to their customers.
KN Radharishnan, Director and CEO of TVS Motor Company said, “Further towards alleviating ambiguity and ensuring a clear policy direction, TVS Motor will offer a goodwill benefit scheme for its customers who have paid over and above the threshold limit fixed by FAME.”. The company has stated that the total refund amount adds up to Rs 20 crore.
Ather Energy didn’t mention the total amount that it will disperse to its customers, but has mentioned that for e-scooter purchased till April 12, 2023, the company will refund the money to the owners. “ In order to be fair to customers who had bought the vehicle prior to this change, we have decided to refund the invoiced amount of the chargers for vehicles bought before 12th April, 2023.”
Vida meanwhile, revised the pricing of its V1 electric scooter by up to Rs 25,000. However, when we reached out to seek clarity around the reason for the price drop, the company refused to comment.
The government reportedly stopped rolling out FAME benefits to EV makers and a couple of manufacturers even have had to face suspension from obtaining the incentives. However, the decision of refunding the amount of the charger to the customers is a good move which will go a long way in not just building trust with these brands but also by helping in accepting this new technology faster by keeping it accessible.
